What Is Quercetin?

Quercetin is a phytochemical from the group of flavonoids – more precisely, the flavonols. Plants form it, among other things, as a pigment and protective substance, for example against UV radiation and pests. We take it in daily in small amounts through food, mainly via onions, kale, berries, apples and black or green tea. The amount actually consumed varies considerably depending on diet – another reason some people turn to concentrated products. Chemically, quercetin belongs to the same large family of substances as the closely related rutin, which is essentially a quercetin molecule with an attached sugar residue.

Phytochemicals like quercetin have been a focus of nutrition research for years. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment classifies them as natural components of plant-based foods whose assessment has not yet been fully concluded on every point. For buying, that mainly means: stay level-headed and pay attention to verifiable product information rather than big promises.

For dietary supplements, quercetin is predominantly obtained from the Japanese pagoda tree (Sophora japonica). Rutin can first be extracted from its buds, which is then converted into quercetin. The Bioavailability Problem – and the Approaches to Solving It

The most important point about quercetin is at the same time its biggest weakness: pure quercetin (the so-called aglycone form) is poorly water-soluble and only a small proportion of it is absorbed by the body. A high milligram figure on the tub therefore says little about how much of it actually reaches the body. This is exactly where the wheat is separated from the chaff. To improve absorption, manufacturers rely on various approaches:

  • Phytosome form: Here, the quercetin is bound to phospholipids (e.g. from sunflower lecithin). This fat-like coating is intended to significantly increase solubility and thus absorption. Phytosome formulations are considered one of the most elaborate and expensive variants.

  • Combination with vitamin C: Many products additionally contain vitamin C. Unlike with quercetin itself, there is an authorised claim here: vitamin C contributes to normal energy metabolism and to the normal function of the immune system.
  • Fine particle size (micronisation): Finely ground quercetin offers a larger surface area, which can support solubility.
  • Combining it with fat when taking it: Because quercetin is fat-loving, it's often recommended to take it with a fat-containing meal – a simple approach that doesn't require any special formulation.

None of these forms is a guarantee of a better product, and the evidence for individual formulations varies in strength. What matters is that a manufacturer addresses the topic of bioavailability at all and explains it in a comprehensible way, rather than just advertising the highest possible milligram figure.

Buying Quercetin: What to Look For

When comparing products, the following criteria will help you tell quality apart from pure marketing.

Pure Quercetin Content

Look at the figure given per capsule or per daily serving – and whether the amount refers to pure quercetin or to an extract that only partly consists of quercetin. Some labels advertise high extract amounts, while the actual quercetin share is lower. Common serving sizes are often in the range of 250 to 500 mg of pure quercetin.

Bioavailability Form

As described above, the form is often more important than the sheer amount. Check whether a phytosome formulation, micronisation, or a sensible combination (e.g. with bromelain or vitamin C) is stated. A product that only says "quercetin, high dose" without a word about absorption leaves this crucial aspect open.

Origin and Raw Material

Reputable providers name the raw-material source – usually Sophora japonica. Transparency about origin is a good sign; missing information is a reason to look more closely.

Purity and Lab Testing

Plant extracts can contain residues. Look for references to lab analyses for heavy metals, pesticides and microbiological purity. Statements such as "lab-tested" or an available certificate of analysis speak for a careful manufacturer. Consumer protection organisations generally point out that dietary supplements are foods and are not subject to official approval the way medicines are – which makes voluntary quality control all the more important.

Additives

Less is usually more. Check the ingredient list for unnecessary fillers, anti-caking agents and coating agents, artificial colourings or sugar. Classic candidates you don't necessarily need include magnesium stearate in large amounts, titanium dioxide, or sweeteners in powders. The capsule shell is relevant for vegans – plant-based cellulose capsules (HPMC) are the standard here, while gelatine capsules are of animal origin. A short, comprehensible ingredient list is a mark of quality.

Form: Capsule or Powder

Capsules are convenient, precisely dosed and flavourless – for most people the most comfortable choice. Powder is often cheaper per gram and can be dosed flexibly, but tastes distinctly bitter and requires scales for precise servings. Either can be a good choice; what matters is that the quality criteria above are met.

Comparing Price Correctly

The price of the tub alone is deceptive. Work it down to the price per gram of pure quercetin and factor in the bioavailability form. A more expensive phytosome capsule can work out cheaper per amount actually absorbed than a cheap powder. Conversely, a high price doesn't automatically justify better quality – what matters is the overall package of content, form, purity and transparency.

That means: anyone making you concrete promises of cure is on legally thin ice. A dietary supplement replaces neither a balanced diet nor medical treatment.

Buying makes most sense when you go about it in a targeted, informed way: a formulation with traceable bioavailability, transparent origin and tested purity – rather than the cheapest tub with the biggest milligram figure. Also stick to a consistently moderate intake rather than dosing very high in the short term; consumer protection organisations generally advise caution with high-dose single substances lacking proven added benefit. If you apply these criteria, you're buying deliberately rather than based on advertising promises. And in the end, that's the best protection against disappointment – for your wallet as much as for your expectations.
