What Is Turmeric (Curcumin)?

Turmeric (Curcuma longa), also known as Indian saffron or yellow ginger, is a plant from the ginger family. The part used is the underground rootstock, the rhizome. Whether freshly cut or dried and ground, it shows the characteristic strong yellow-orange colour that also gives curry its hue.

The best-known constituent of the turmeric root is curcumin – a secondary plant compound from the curcuminoid group that is responsible for the intense colour. Depending on origin and variety, the curcumin content of the dried rhizome is typically around two to five percent. Turmeric has also been a fixture of South Asian cuisine and culture for centuries, where it holds ritual and cosmetic significance as well.

What Is Frankincense (Boswellia)?

Unlike turmeric, frankincense is not a root but a resin. It is obtained from the trunk of trees of the genus Boswellia, above all Boswellia serrata (Indian frankincense) as well as Boswellia sacra and related species that grow in East Africa and on the Arabian Peninsula. When the bark is scored, a milky sap is released that hardens in the air into golden-yellow to brownish resin granules – known as olibanum.

The characteristic constituents of the resin are the boswellic acids, a group of triterpenic acids, along with essential oils that give frankincense its typical scent. It is precisely this scent that has made frankincense a fixture of religious and cultural rituals for thousands of years – from antiquity to the present day. In traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda), boswellia is known by the name "Salai Guggul".

The Difference: Active Compounds and Tradition

At first glance, turmeric and frankincense are often mentioned in the same breath, yet they come from completely different botanical worlds. The key differences at a glance:

  • Plant part: Turmeric is the rootstock (rhizome) of a herbaceous plant. Frankincense is the dried resin of a tree.
  • Key compound: With turmeric, the focus is on the yellow curcumin; with frankincense, it's the boswellic acids.
  • Origin: Turmeric is grown mainly in South Asia. Frankincense trees grow in the dry regions of India, East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
  • Sensory impression: Turmeric stands out for its colour and earthy, spicy taste, while frankincense is known for its distinctive, resinous scent.
  • Tradition: Turmeric is deeply rooted in the cuisine, cosmetics and rituals of South Asia. Frankincense has been a cultural and religious symbol since antiquity and a staple of Ayurvedic formulations.

Turmeric and Ginger – Close Relatives

Bioavailability and Forms

One practical difference concerns how well the respective key compound is absorbed by the body. Curcumin is considered poorly water-soluble – pure curcumin from turmeric powder is absorbed only to a small extent. That's why many preparations traditionally combine the root with fat and black pepper (specifically its constituent piperine). The market also offers specially processed forms of curcumin (such as micellar or phospholipid-based extracts) aimed at improving solubility.

Boswellic acids are also fat-soluble; frankincense preparations are therefore usually available as standardised dry extracts of the resin, often with a stated boswellic acid content. Both raw materials are available today in various forms:

  • Powder: close to the natural product, flexible to dose, but intense in its own flavour.
  • Capsules: flavour-neutral and practical for on the go, with a defined amount per capsule.
  • Extracts: concentrated on specific constituents and standardised.

Combine or Take Separately – How to Choose?

Turmeric and frankincense are not mutually exclusive. Because their key compounds are chemically different, they even appear together in some formulations. Whether you choose one, the other, or a combination is ultimately a matter of personal preference and intended use – for example as a culinary spice, as a fragrant resin, or as a food supplement in capsule form.

A few pointers to help you choose:

  • Cooking and colour: If you're after a culinary ingredient, turmeric is the natural choice – it colours and seasons.
  • Scent and ritual: If you appreciate the classic resinous scent, frankincense is the right choice.
  • Standardisation: If you want a defined amount of the key compound, look for standardised extracts with clear labelling.
  • Tolerance: Start with a small amount and observe how well you tolerate the respective product.

Putting It Honestly

Turmeric and frankincense are two traditional plant products with entirely distinct profiles – one a yellow root, the other a fragrant resin. Both have been valued across different cultures for a long time, and both are now conveniently available as powder, capsule or extract. A blanket statement about which of the two is "better" cannot seriously be made: their origins, constituents and uses are simply too different for that.

It's important to us to be upfront: food supplements are no substitute for a varied diet or medical advice.
