That's the central, scientifically recognized contribution of this vitamin. In particular, it protects the polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes from being attacked by so-called free radicals.

Free radicals arise quite naturally during metabolism, for instance during energy production in cells, and are further encouraged by environmental factors. An excess of these reactive molecules relative to the body's own protective systems is called oxidative stress. This is exactly where vitamin E comes in: as a fat-soluble antioxidant, it embeds itself in cell membranes and intercepts radicals before they can damage the sensitive fat building blocks.
