In regions such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the soil is naturally low in iodine, which is why supply here has traditionally counted among the more critical ones. Anyone considering a dietary supplement quickly runs into very different products: pure potassium iodide, kelp and seaweed preparations, combinations with selenium. The most important point up front: iodine is not a nutrient where "more is better." Why the Body Needs Iodine – and Who Benefits Most
Iodine is the central building block of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Without enough iodine, the thyroid cannot produce these hormones in sufficient amounts – and via metabolism, they govern practically every cell in the body. Accordingly, clear claims are authorised for iodine in the EU: Iodine contributes to normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function. In addition: Iodine contributes to normal cognitive function.
According to the German Nutrition Society (DGE), the daily requirement for adults is around 200 micrograms (µg). Through diet, many people cover part of this via iodised table salt, saltwater fish and dairy products. However, anyone who rarely eats fish, consistently avoids salt, eats a vegan diet or prefers unprocessed foods does not always reliably reach this amount. Requirements are also increased during pregnancy and breastfeeding – but supplementation in that case is a question that belongs with medical care and should not be decided on your own.
The Main Forms of Iodine Compared
When buying, you will essentially come across two sources. The decisive difference lies less in "effect" than in the reliability of the dosage.
Potassium iodide (and sodium iodide): This is the classic, precisely defined form. Potassium iodide is a salt that can be dosed with precision – the label then states a fixed amount of iodine per capsule or drop, for example 100 or 150 µg. This predictability is the big advantage: you know exactly how much iodine you are taking in and can keep your intake cleanly within the upper limit. Pharmacy tablets and classic iodine prophylaxis also work with this form.
Kelp / seaweed iodine: Kelp is a brown alga and a natural source of iodine that is especially popular in the "natural" segment. The catch: the iodine content of seaweed can vary considerably depending on species, harvest area and batch – differences of several-fold are possible from batch to batch. Reputable manufacturers therefore standardise their seaweed extracts to a defined iodine content and state it clearly. Without such standardisation, you are essentially buying a grab bag: sometimes you fall short, sometimes you risk unknowingly exceeding the limit by a wide margin. For predictable supply, potassium iodide is therefore usually the more reliable choice; seaweed iodine can be an option if the content is cleanly standardised and lab-tested.
What to Look for When Buying
Dosage in µg – and keep the upper limit in view. Make sure the amount of iodine is clearly stated in micrograms per serving. For everyday supplementation, amounts of roughly 100 to 150 µg are common, to close a gap to the recommended intake. What matters is total intake from all sources: the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) states a tolerable upper intake level (UL) for adults of 600 µg per day; the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) recommends a considerably more cautious maximum of 100 µg of iodine per daily dose for supplements, so that some margin remains alongside dietary intake. You should be critical of products that deliver several times that amount per daily serving.
Potassium iodide or standardised seaweed iodine. Choose either clearly dosed potassium iodide or – if it should be of seaweed origin – a product with an explicitly standardised, lab-verified iodine content. "Kelp" without a specific µg figure is a warning sign.
Purity and lab testing. Origin is particularly relevant for sea algae, because seaweed can accumulate other substances from seawater alongside iodine.
