What Is Sea Moss? Irish Moss and Chondrus crispus
Sea moss is an umbrella term for edible red algae that grow on rocky coastlines. The classic species the name comes from is Chondrus crispus — the same seaweed traditionally harvested as Irish moss along the coasts of the North Atlantic, for example off Ireland, Great Britain, and North America. Botanically, it's a marine alga, not a land plant, and not a moss in the true sense. Characteristic features are its branched, fan-like growth and its color, which can range from reddish-purple through yellowish to greenish.
Carrageenan, a thickening agent, is traditionally obtained from Chondrus crispus; it's this substance that makes the alga swell into a gel-like mass in water. This exact property is why sea moss can be turned into a gel at home. Alongside Chondrus crispus, related species such as Gracilaria are also sold commercially as "sea moss." These look similar but are botanically not the same thing — a point that becomes important when buying.
As a marine alga, sea moss naturally contains various minerals and trace elements, including iodine. Forms: Gel, Powder, and Capsules — and Iodine Content
Sea moss is offered in three main forms, which differ in handling and how easy they are to dose:
- Dried raw alga: The original form. It's soaked, rinsed, and then blended with water into a gel. This gives you the most control over preparation but takes time and makes the iodine content hard to estimate.
- Ready-made sea moss gel: Convenient, keeps refrigerated, and can be used portion by portion. Its quality depends entirely on the raw alga used.
- Powder: Dried and ground alga, easy to stir into drinks and longer-lasting. The concentration can be higher than in the water-rich gel.

Across all forms, one thing holds true: the natural iodine content of sea moss varies considerably. Depending on the alga and batch, it can range from fairly moderate to very high. What to Look For When Buying Sea Moss
Because the market is so hard to navigate, it's worth comparing sea moss using verifiable criteria rather than advertising promises.
Origin and controlled cultivation. Reputable providers state where the alga comes from and whether it was wild-harvested or grown in controlled aquaculture. A clear statement of origin is an initial quality signal, because seaweed can absorb substances from the surrounding water.
Stated and limited iodine content. This is the most important point. A good provider states the iodine content per portion — ideally based on an actual analysis rather than a rough estimate. Heavy-metal and contaminant lab testing. Depending on the waters they grow in, seaweeds can accumulate heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, or mercury. Trustworthy providers have their batches tested for contaminants and make the results, or at least statements on compliance with limit values, available. A current, batch-specific lab certificate is a strong argument in a product's favor.
Authentic Chondrus crispus, not "pool moss" or "fake moss." So-called "pool moss" or "fake moss" circulates on the market — alga grown not on natural rocky coastlines but in artificial tanks with added mineral salts, which then looks visually thick and crusted with salt. Confusion with the botanically different Gracilaria is also common. Look for a clear statement of species (authentic Chondrus crispus) and for realistic product photos without a thick white salt layer.

Sea moss is often marketed online with sweeping promises. From a factual standpoint: there are no authorized health claims for sea moss at the EU level. Statements that attribute specific effects on the thyroid, immune system, skin, or metabolism to the alga are, accordingly, unsubstantiated and not legally permitted. Sea moss is a traditional food and a versatile ingredient — no more than that can honestly be claimed.
