Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) and artichoke (Cynara scolymus) are two different plants from the daisy family. With milk thistle, mainly the fruit is used, containing the active compound complex silymarin; with artichoke, it's the leaves, containing the bitter compound cynarin. They differ in the plant part used, their constituents, and traditional use.
Milk thistle and artichoke often come up in the same breath when the topic is plant-based botanicals. Both belong botanically to the daisy family, both have a long tradition in European herbal knowledge, and both are found today in capsules, extracts and teas. Even so, they are two fundamentally different plants with different constituents. If you're standing in front of the shelf wondering what the difference actually is, here's a factual breakdown: origin, constituents, forms, and what matters for quality. The most important clarification up front: this text describes the plants botanically and puts their traditional use into context. It is not a guide to treating complaints.
What Is Milk Thistle?
Milk thistle (botanically Silybum marianum) is an annual to biennial thistle with strikingly marbled leaves and purplish-red flowers. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, it now grows across large parts of Europe. In herbal knowledge, it is mainly the ripe fruits (technically Silybi mariani fructus) that are used, commonly referred to as seeds.
The characteristic constituent of milk thistle fruits is silymarin – not a single substance, but a complex of several flavonolignans, including silibinin (often named as the main component), silicristin and silidianin. Silymarin is poorly soluble in water, which is why a simple tea contains only a little of it, and standardised extracts play a major role in the literature. The fruits also contain fixed oil, which is why they feel mild and oily. Milk thistle has a centuries-long history of use in European herbal tradition and has long been mentioned in connection with the liver – though, as explained further below, this association describes a tradition of use, not an effect promise for a dietary supplement.
What Is Artichoke?
Most people know artichoke (Cynara scolymus, botanically also classified as a variety of Cynara cardunculus) as a vegetable – the fleshy flower base and bracts are what's eaten. In herbal knowledge, however, it's the leaves (Cynarae folium) that take centre stage – not the edible part on your plate, but the plant's large, feathery foliage leaves.
Artichoke is typically known for its pronounced bitter taste. This is due to bitter compounds, above all cynarin (a caffeoylquinic acid), accompanied by flavonoids such as luteolin derivatives and further caffeoylquinic acids. Unlike milk thistle's silymarin, these substances are more water-soluble, which explains why artichoke leaves were also traditionally used as tea or in aqueous extracts. Like milk thistle, artichoke is one of the classic European bitter plants with a long tradition of use, generally mentioned in connection with digestion. The point that's often confusing: the part eaten as a vegetable and the plant part found in extracts are not the same thing.
The Difference: Constituents and Traditional Use
At first glance, the two seem similar – spiny members of the daisy family, often mentioned in the same context in guides. The differences are in the details:
- Plant part used: Milk thistle → the fruits/seeds. Artichoke → the leaves (not the vegetable).
- Key substance: Milk thistle → silymarin (a flavonolignan complex). Artichoke → cynarin and other bitter compounds.
- Taste: Milk thistle fruits are fairly mild and oily; artichoke leaves are distinctly bitter.
- Solubility: Silymarin is water-insoluble, which is why extracts are mostly used here; artichoke's bitter compounds are more easily found in aqueous preparations.
As a result, the typical preparation also differs: with artichoke, aqueous extracts work because the bitter compounds are soluble; with milk thistle, you practically always turn to extracts to get a meaningful silymarin content. So if you simply steep the seeds as a tea, you get only a fraction of the characteristic compound complex. These solubility differences are the main reason the two plants are processed so differently in products.
Traditionally, both plants have long been used in a European context – milk thistle mostly in connection with the liver, artichoke as a classic bitter plant related to digestion. Important for context: these associations describe a tradition of use, not proven effects of a dietary supplement. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) maintains what are known as herbal monographs for both plants, in which the status of "traditional herbal medicinal product" is based on long-standing use – this concerns registered medicinal products and is not the same as a dietary supplement. Forms & Quality
Both botanicals come in several forms, and quality varies considerably. Here are the common variants:
- Tea/dried herb: Common with artichoke; rather impractical with milk thistle, because silymarin barely transfers into hot water.
- Standardised extract: In capsules or tablets. "Standardised" means that the content of the key substance (e.g. silymarin or cynarin/caffeoylquinic acids) is set to a fixed percentage – this makes products more comparable.
- Whole-plant powder: Inexpensive, but the content of characteristic constituents is usually lower and less consistent than with extracts.
What you can look out for when comparing, without falling for advertising promises:
- Declared extract content: Does it state how much silymarin or cynarin/caffeoylquinic acids are in each serving – or just a vague "plant amount"?
- Herb-to-extract ratio (DER): Figures like 20:1 indicate the concentration, but are only truly meaningful alongside a standardised active-compound content.
- Purity: Testing for heavy metals, pesticides and microbial load; reputable providers disclose their analyses.
- Clear labelling: Complete ingredient list, plant origin and traceable batch information.

Another point that's often overlooked: a high price or a high herb-to-extract ratio alone is not yet proof of quality. What matters is the combination of a traceable active-compound content and clean analytics. Even with naturally sourced raw materials, composition can vary depending on growing region, harvest time and processing – an effect you may already know from the comparison Acerola or Synthetic Vitamin C. If you value transparency about origin, you should actively look for this information rather than relying on buzzwords like "natural" or "high-dose."
How to Choose – and Can They Be Combined?
Whether milk thistle, artichoke or both make sense depends on your personal goal and, above all, your individual situation – there's no blanket answer. A few factual points of orientation:
- If the bitter-compound aspect interests you (classic bitter plant), the path tends to lead to artichoke and its leaves.
- If the silymarin complex interests you, milk thistle fruit is the plant with this characteristic key substance.
- Combination products contain both plants, sometimes supplemented with choline or other botanicals. This can be practical, but it makes assessing the individual doses harder – make sure the content of each component is transparently stated.
A basic point up front: a dietary supplement does not replace a balanced diet. Bitter compounds are also found in many types of vegetables, and a varied diet provides the broad foundation on which individual products can play a meaningful role in the first place. An Honest Assessment
As rich in tradition as milk thistle and artichoke are, no health-related claims (health claims) may currently be advertised for them as dietary supplements in the EU. Botanical substances have a special status ("pending") in the European health claims assessment, and consumer protection organisations explicitly point out that advertising claims about "liver care" or "detox" should be viewed critically for such products.
That doesn't mean the plants are "ineffective" – registered herbal medicinal products based on milk thistle or artichoke are a separate, medically regulated category with their own requirements. But it does mean: a dietary supplement is not a medicine, and you shouldn't expect a therapeutic effect from a supplement. It's also important: persistent complaints involving the liver, gallbladder or digestion, yellowish skin, upper abdominal pain or similar symptoms should be clarified by a doctor and not self-treated with plant products. If you have a known bile duct condition, particular caution is advised with bitter-compound artichoke products – another reason to seek medical advice beforehand.
