Shilajit, also known as mumijo or mineral pitch, is a traditional natural product from high mountain regions that has grown strongly in popularity in recent years. As demand has grown, so has the number of products on offer, and the quality differences between them are considerable. Anyone looking to buy shilajit faces a range that spans from highly pure, lab-tested batches to unclear raw material with no documentation at all. This guide explains what really matters, what role fulvic acid content plays, and why heavy-metal purity is by far the most important purchasing criterion for this product.
What Is Shilajit (Mumijo, Mineral Pitch)?
Shilajit is a dark, resin-like mass that forms over very long periods of time in rock crevices high in the mountains. It is traditionally found mainly in regions of the Himalayas, the Altai and the Caucasus. Depending on the region of origin, it is colloquially called mumijo or mineral pitch. The material forms from decomposed plant matter and mineral components and becomes soft and pliable at warmer temperatures.
In traditional use, for example in Ayurvedic contexts, shilajit has a long history. For its use as a dietary supplement in the EU, the following is important: no health claims are authorised for shilajit under European law. Statements about a specific effect on energy, hormone balance or performance are therefore not legally permitted and are rightly the exception in reputable buying guides. What is characteristic of shilajit is its content of so-called humic substances, in particular fulvic acid. In high-quality products, this component is determined analytically and stated on the label. It serves as one of the central quality markers used to compare batches.
Forms: Resin vs. Powder vs. Capsule, and Fulvic Acid Content
Shilajit is offered in three main forms, which differ in handling, processing and transparency.
Resin: Resin is the most original form and is popular with many users because it comes closest to the traditional product. It is viscous to firm and is taken out in portions. The downside: dosing is less precise than with standardised forms, and handling is somewhat more cumbersome. What matters is that resin, too, should be purified and lab-tested, because this is precisely where poorly processed raw material is occasionally sold.
Powder: Shilajit powder is produced by drying and grinding. It is easy to dose and stir into liquid. With powders, it is worth checking whether it is pure shilajit extract or whether carrier substances have been added that dilute the actual content.
Capsule: Capsules are the most convenient and most precisely dosable form and can be taken without any taste. Here, too, the same applies: the stated fulvic acid content and a certificate of analysis are more meaningful than the form itself.
On fulvic acid content: it is usually stated as a percentage and varies depending on origin and processing. What matters is less a spectacularly high number and more that the figure is stated transparently, is traceable, and is backed up by a laboratory analysis at all. What to Look for When Buying
Shilajit is a natural product that comes from rock, and that is exactly where the most important issue comes from: purity. Raw mineral pitch can naturally contain impurities, which is why processing and independent testing are not optional but central.

Heavy-metal testing (very important). This is the most critical point. Because shilajit forms within rock, unpurified or poorly tested raw material can be contaminated with heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, arsenic or mercury. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) points out in general terms that intake of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium through food should be kept as low as possible. Consumer organisations have also repeatedly flagged possible heavy-metal levels in dietary supplements made from mineral or plant-based raw materials. For this reason, only buy shilajit if a current test certificate with specific heavy-metal values is available that demonstrates compliance with the applicable statutory maximum levels. Stated fulvic acid content. The fulvic acid content should be substantiated, not merely claimed. An analysis value tied to the specific batch is worth far more than a generic marketing slogan.
Origin. Traceable information on the region, such as the Himalayas or Altai, as well as on altitude, speaks for transparency. Origin alone, however, is no proof of quality: what matters is that the product from that origin was subsequently purified and tested.
Purity and composition. Check whether pure shilajit is being offered or whether it contains extenders, fillers or undeclared additives. A clear, complete list of ingredients is a must.
Price. High-quality shilajit that has been elaborately purified and tested multiple times comes at a price. Strikingly cheap offers often come at the expense of processing and testing scope. Resin is usually taken as a small portion, as indicated on the packaging, and dissolved in warm water or another beverage. Powder can likewise be stirred in, while capsules are swallowed with liquid. At the same time, the scientific evidence base is limited as things stand today, and no health claims are authorised for shilajit under EU law. Anyone who wants to buy with honest information should therefore not expect specific claims of effect and should view offers that make such promises critically.
The real quality issue with shilajit is not one of effect, but one of purity. Because the material originates from rock, processing determines whether the end result on the shelf is a clean, safe product or potentially heavy-metal-contaminated raw material. This is exactly where reputable products part ways with dubious ones. The good news: this quality can be objectively verified, namely through certificates of analysis for heavy metals and fulvic acid content.
