What Is MSM?
MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane (chemically, dimethyl sulfone). It's an organic sulphur compound that occurs as a white, odourless, crystalline powder and dissolves readily in water. Sulphur is a quantitatively significant element in the human body and a component of various protein building blocks. MSM contains around a third of its weight in organically bound sulphur and is therefore often offered as a sulphur-containing dietary supplement.
MSM occurs naturally in small amounts in foods – for example, in milk, coffee, some vegetables, and fruit. The concentrations there, however, are very low. The MSM found in capsules or powder is therefore manufactured industrially, in order to achieve defined amounts and consistent purity. The term "organic sulphur," which MSM is often marketed with, refers purely chemically to the carbon-bound sulphur structure of the molecule – not to organic farming or natural extraction.
Manufacturing and Origin
Commercial MSM is produced through chemical synthesis. The starting material is usually DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), which is oxidised to dimethyl sulfone – that is, MSM. The resulting crude product still contains by-products afterwards and must be purified. It's precisely this purification step that determines a large part of the final product quality. This is why origin from a "natural substance" alone says little; what matters is how clean the finished raw material ends up being.
Two processes are common: distillation and crystallisation. In distillation, MSM is evaporated and then re-liquefied, which reliably separates out impurities. Crystallisation from a solvent is simpler and cheaper, but is considered less thorough, since solvent residues can remain. In many products, the reference standard for distilled MSM is the US branded raw material OptiMSM, which is distilled multiple times and supplied with batch documentation. What to Look For When Buying MSM
At first glance, the labels look similar – "high purity," "lab-tested," "99.9%." Such terms aren't protected and, on their own, say little. The following criteria help separate genuine quality from marketing.
1. Purity above 99.9%. High-quality MSM is declared with a purity of at least 99.9%. This figure should be explicitly stated on the packaging or in the certificate of analysis, not just used as an advertising slogan. If a concrete figure is missing, caution is warranted.
