When buying sulforaphane products, what matters is a standardized glucoraphanin content, active myrosinase (the enzyme that converts glucoraphanin into sulforaphane), origin from broccoli sprout extract, and transparent lab testing for purity. Look for clear amounts stated per capsule rather than just grams of extract. Sulforaphane is only formed when glucoraphanin and myrosinase come together.
Sulforaphane is one of the most discussed plant compounds of recent years and is turning up on more and more supplement labels. At the same time, the products are barely comparable: one manufacturer advertises broccoli extract, the next broccoli sprouts, and a third states a glucoraphanin content you'll search for in vain on competing packs. This guide sorts out the key terms and shows you what to actually look for when buying, so you can realistically judge price and quality.
An important note up front: we assess only quality and buying criteria here. There is a lot of marketing around sulforaphane that works with sweeping promises. For your purchasing decision, those promises are of little help — what matters are verifiable statements on the label and in the certificate of analysis.
What Is Sulforaphane (from Broccoli and Broccoli Sprouts)?
Sulforaphane belongs to the group of isothiocyanates, a class of secondary plant compounds found mainly in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, rocket and cabbage. This group of compounds is characterised by a slightly pungent, mustard-like taste. Sulforaphane is not present as such in the fresh plant; it only forms once the plant tissue is chopped or the cells are broken open. Anyone chewing raw broccoli or chopping sprouts sets exactly this process in motion.
Young broccoli sprouts are particularly rich in the precursor of sulforaphane. Depending on variety and cultivation, they contain many times the precursor amount found in mature broccoli florets, which is why many supplements specifically rely on broccoli sprout extract. On the market you will essentially come across three product forms: capsules with broccoli extract, capsules with broccoli sprout extract, and powder made from dried sprouts. The forms differ less in the base material than in the degree of standardisation and in whether an active myrosinase is included. That is exactly what makes the following two terms the core of every buying decision.
Glucoraphanin and Myrosinase: Why the Enzyme Matters So Much
To understand sulforaphane products, you need to know two terms: glucoraphanin and myrosinase. Glucoraphanin is the stable, flavourless storage form in the plant — the raw material, so to speak. Myrosinase is a plant's own enzyme that sits in a separate compartment of the cell. Only once the cell structure breaks open do the two meet, and myrosinase converts glucoraphanin into sulforaphane. Think of it as a two-component system: the raw material alone is not enough — it also needs the right converter.
This is exactly where the decisive point for product quality lies. Many extracts are processed in a way that largely destroys the heat-sensitive myrosinase. If a product contains glucoraphanin but no active myrosinase, the body depends on the enzyme activity of the gut flora to form sulforaphane at all — and this varies a great deal between individuals. Products that supply an active myrosinase in addition to glucoraphanin (for example through gently dried sprout powder or a declared myrosinase content) are therefore the more transparent choice from a consumer's point of view.
A high glucoraphanin content alone therefore says little about how much sulforaphane is actually available in the end. This is the most common reason why two products with an apparently identical extract content are barely comparable in practice. Anyone who looks at the label and focuses only on the largest milligram figure easily overlooks this connection.

What to Look for When Buying
Sulforaphane preparations differ significantly in declaration and processing. These points help you tell reputable products apart from vaguely labelled ones.
Standardised glucoraphanin or sulforaphane content. A figure for pure extract in milligrams says little, because extracts vary enormously in active-compound share. What is meaningful is a standardised content, for example "extract with X mg glucoraphanin per capsule". Only this way can products and prices actually be compared. If the pack states only "500 mg broccoli extract" without a percentage, the actual active-compound content remains in the dark.
Active myrosinase. Check whether the manufacturer mentions myrosinase activity or combines a sprout component. If there is no information on this at all, it is unclear how much sulforaphane can even form from the glucoraphanin contained.
Origin from broccoli sprout extract. Compared with mature broccoli, broccoli sprouts usually supply markedly higher precursor amounts. An extract that names sprouts as its source is generally better documented than a vague "broccoli powder".
Purity and lab testing. Reputable suppliers have their batches tested for contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides and microbial load. Additives and capsule quality. Look for a short ingredient list without unnecessary fillers and release agents. Vegetarian or vegan capsule shells are standard for plant-based preparations.
Price per standardised amount. Work out the price not per pack, but per capsule and per glucoraphanin share contained. A product that looks cheap at first can be more expensive if its active-compound content is low. Use
Manufacturers give varying guidance on intake, usually one to two capsules a day. Follow the serving recommendation on the pack and do not exceed it, since it relates to the specific product's dosage. Many users take sulforaphane capsules with a meal, which can make them easier to tolerate.
Because the conversion of glucoraphanin to sulforaphane is heat-sensitive, you should not put the capsules into hot drinks but swallow them with cold or lukewarm water. Store the product dry, cool and protected from light so that the declared content is preserved throughout its shelf life. If you regularly take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss use with your doctor beforehand. Dietary supplements are not a substitute for a varied diet.
Whether you take a preparation in the morning or evening is a matter of taste and does not change the manufacturer's guidance. More useful than the exact time is regular intake over a longer period, as is common with plant-based supplements. If you already use other preparations, make sure not to unintentionally overdose, and keep an eye on the serving recommendations of each individual product.
An Honest Assessment
Sulforaphane is an exciting plant compound that is seeing a lot of movement in research. At the same time, the evidence in humans is not yet as clear-cut as some advertising suggests, and no health claims are authorised in the EU for sulforaphane or broccoli extract. Reputable suppliers therefore promise no effect, but describe origin, content and processing.
For your buying decision, that means: don't be guided by big promises, but by verifiable facts. A product with a clearly declared glucoraphanin content, active myrosinase and transparent lab testing is the more sensible choice than one that advertises with vague health promises. If you already regularly eat broccoli, sprouts and other vegetables, you already cover part of these plant compounds through diet — a supplement can be a deliberate addition, not a necessity.
The honest comparison between fresh vegetables and capsules is also worth making. Fresh, briefly cooked or raw broccoli and home-grown sprouts bring the plant compounds along in their natural context — including the plant's own enzymes. A standardised preparation, by contrast, has the advantage of a consistent, documented amount. The two are not mutually exclusive. If you reach for a preparation, treat it as a complement to a plant-rich diet and consistently apply the criteria named above when choosing a product.
Take a moment before buying to check the label and the manufacturer's information, rather than looking only at the price or advertising claims. A look at the standardisation, the myrosinase declaration and the lab testing can save you, in case of doubt, from a product that looks cheap but is not very transparent.
