The label needs to state how much pure, elemental zinc is contained per daily dose, not the weight of the entire compound. "500 mg zinc bisglycinate" sounds like a lot, but corresponds to only a fraction of that in actual zinc. Reputable manufacturers clearly state the elemental content (e.g., "25 mg zinc per capsule").
2. Form and bioavailability. As described above: prefer organic forms if good absorption matters to you. Make sure the form is stated at all – if it's missing from the label, it's often oxide behind it.
3. Dosage and the upper limit. More isn't better. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has derived a tolerable upper intake level (UL) for adults of 25 mg of zinc per day from all sources combined. Consistently much higher amounts can interfere with copper absorption. For dietary supplements specifically, Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) recommends even notably lower daily maximums. For most people, moderately dosed products in the range of a few milligrams up to a maximum of 25 mg are entirely sufficient – high-dose products with 50 mg or more make sense only in exceptional cases and for a limited time.
4. Zinc-to-copper ratio. Anyone taking zinc at a higher dose or over a longer period should keep an eye on their copper balance – the two trace elements compete for absorption.
