- "Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose" or "HPMC" (also "cellulose"): plant-based hard capsule - vegan.
- "Gelatine" (beef, pork or fish): animal shell - not vegan, usually not vegetarian.
- "Glycerine" / "glycerol" plus gelatine: typical classic softgel.
- Note "vegan" or "plant-based softgel capsule": plant-based softgel, rarer but available.
With this knowledge, anyone consistently living vegan will quickly find the suitable variant. Does the shell influence absorption?
A common question: does the body absorb more from a softgel than from a hard capsule? As a blanket statement, no. Both shells dissolve in the digestive tract and release their contents. The apparent advantage of softgels with fat-soluble active ingredients does not come from the shell itself, but from the fact that the active ingredient is already dissolved in oil there - and fat-soluble substances are simply absorbed bound to fat.
