No, magnesium does not make you gain weight. It is a mineral with no calories, and in clinical analyses body weight and BMI did not change under magnesium. It is not a slimming aid either. If the scale fluctuates after you start, water, salt in effervescent tablets or daily life are usually behind it.
No, magnesium does not make you fat. It is a mineral and supplies no calories, and in the analyses that compare body weight before and after magnesium, the scale does not move. It is not a slimming aid either. There is no authorised claim for that, so we promise you nothing in that direction. Still, the number on the scale can come out higher in the morning, especially if you have just started a new supplement and have been watching the scale, your belly and your waistband more closely than you did before. What can be behind that is explained below.
Why the scale can read higher after you start
Body weight swings from day to day, and that is entirely normal, even when nothing in your routine changes. A salty dinner, a glass of wine, a hot day, your cycle, a new tablet for something else entirely: any of them shifts the water in your body. People who begin a new habit often step on the scale more often at the same time, and then every fluctuation gets noticed and promptly gets someone to blame.
Magnesium is blamed most often simply because it is the new thing in the bathroom cabinet. Usually it is innocent. If you want to shed water from your tissue, look at the salt in your diet rather than at a capsule of magnesium.
The form it comes in is another matter. Effervescent tablets, sticks and powders bring ingredients that do not appear in a capsule. For a well-known pharmacy product with 365 mg of magnesium, the patient leaflet lists two sweeteners, sugar in the colourings, sorbitol in the flavouring and 109 mg of sodium per effervescent tablet. That is just the technology of fizzing, not a scandal. But if you drink one or two tablets a day, you take in sodium and sweeteners every time. So check the ingredient list before you suspect the magnesium itself.
What the analyses say about magnesium and body weight
A large review of clinical trials in adults, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, looked at whether body weight and BMI change under magnesium. The result is unambiguous: no meaningful change, neither overall nor in the subgroups the authors examined one by one. Body weight includes the water in your body. Had magnesium stored water to any notable degree, it would have shown up on average.
The reverse holds too. If you hope magnesium will help you lose weight, the data give you nothing to hold on to. The question "Does it make you fat?" and the question "Does it make you slim?" have the same answer: nothing happens on the scale.
Magnesium for weight loss: which form, how much, in the evening?
These searches are common, and they assume something that is not true, namely that there is a form that makes you slim. There is not. Bisglycinate, citrate, malate or oxide differ in their content of elemental magnesium and in how well the gut tolerates them. They do nothing to the scale.
What magnesium does in the body, on the other hand, is well established. Magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. In your cells it works as a helper for more than 600 enzymes, including those that turn food into energy. That does not mean it burns more calories. The claim describes a normal process, not an extra.
Online testimonials are individual impressions. People who take magnesium in the evening usually start a ritual at the same time: earlier to bed, no phone, a cup of tea, and all of that can genuinely change your day without the mineral having anything to do with it. Combination products with valerian change nothing: weight is still not a promised effect.
Magnesium deficiency and weight gain: is there a link?
A magnesium deficiency is rare with a balanced diet and a healthy metabolism, according to the German Nutrition Society. According to the National Nutrition Survey, women average 284 mg a day and men 345 mg. The estimated value for an adequate intake is 300 mg for women and 350 mg for men. Many people are therefore close to it.
As first signs of a pronounced deficiency, the DGE names loss of appetite, nausea, tiredness and weakness. Weight gain is not among them. Observations do show that people with a low magnesium intake more often have metabolic syndrome. Which is cause and which is effect cannot be read from that. And it does not turn a capsule into a slimming aid.
More common reasons for a deficiency are long-lasting diarrhoea, regularly drinking a lot of alcohol and certain medicines, such as water tablets. If you suspect this, have it checked by a doctor. A blood test helps only to a limited extent: the level in the serum falls only after weeks of insufficient supply, because the body holds it within a narrow range.
How to take magnesium so it works in everyday life
The recommended intake on the label is your frame. Within that frame you can spread the amount out, and that is actually smart, because the gut copes better with smaller portions: the body usually absorbs magnesium better from smaller servings than from one large one. With a sensitive gut you also avoid the most common side effect of magnesium supplements, namely diarrhoea.
- Breakfast: One capsule of Magnesium Complex with your breakfast bread, with a glass of water.
- Dinner: The second capsule with your evening meal. That spreads the 400 mg of elemental magnesium from the complex across the day.
- With the bisglycinate: Three capsules a day with meals, most simply one each with breakfast, lunch and dinner. That gives 360 mg of elemental magnesium.
- Coffee and alcohol: If you drink several cups of coffee a day or regularly drink alcohol, you lose more magnesium through the kidneys and should keep that in mind for your daily amount.
- Other minerals: High amounts of calcium, iron, copper or zinc in supplements can dampen absorption. Take them with some distance, for example at lunch rather than together.
How long does the body need to absorb magnesium? Absorption takes place in the gut during digestion, so over a few hours rather than minutes. From food, roughly a third to a half gets into the blood. Do not expect your body to be "topped up" after two days. If you want to notice changes in daily life, you need regularity over weeks.
Important before you start: with kidney disease or regular medication, talk about magnesium with your doctor first.
Threonate in the morning, bisglycinate in the evening: does that work?
Yes, that works as long as you keep an eye on the total amount. We do not stock threonate. Our magnesium bisglycinate is the form for anyone who wants a gentle-on-the-stomach chelate. It is bound to the amino acid glycine and delivers 360 mg of elemental magnesium in three capsules.
Combining two forms means two packs, two prices and more planning, and it has no effect on the scale. Simpler is one form, spread across the day.
Capsule, effervescent tablet or stick: what is really inside?
A capsule holds the magnesium compound and the shell. That is all. Our Magnesium Complex has a plant-based shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and combines four magnesium sources: citrate, malate, bisglycinate and oxide. Together they give 400 mg of elemental magnesium in two capsules. With 180 capsules in the tub, that lasts 90 days, and in daily life it is just two capsules with meals, nothing to stir, nothing to dissolve.
Effervescent tablets and sticks are practical if you dislike capsules or are on the move, but they bring sodium, sweeteners or flavourings that you simply do not take in with a neutral-tasting capsule. Nothing more.
The scale keeps rising anyway? How to find the cause
Go through it step by step, without dropping the supplement straight away. Has your sleep changed? Any new medication? More alcohol at the weekend, fewer walks, holidays, your cycle? Weigh yourself for a week at the same time, ideally in the morning after using the toilet, and watch the trend rather than the single day.
One outlier of a single day means nothing. But if your weight climbs step by step over several weeks with no obvious reason such as a holiday, medication or a change in how you eat, it is no longer a question about capsules. Then it belongs in a doctor's practice, with a blood count and a thyroid check.
Matching Products from Scheunengut
We offer two magnesium products. The Magnesium Complex delivers 400 mg of elemental magnesium from four sources in two capsules, vegan in the shell, made in Germany and lab-tested. The Magnesium Bisglycinate brings 360 mg of elemental magnesium in three capsules, bound to glycine and free of additives, colourings and fillers. 240 capsules last 80 days.
Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It contributes to normal muscle function and to the normal functioning of the nervous system. It also contributes to normal psychological function and to electrolyte balance. The mineral does these jobs regardless of what the scale shows.
We have been doing this since 2012, without investors, with a focus on pure raw-material quality. Every batch goes to an independent lab, and you can find the latest report on the product page. If you have muscles, nerves and everyday energy in mind, take the complex. If you prefer a single, gentle form, reach for the bisglycinate.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does magnesium make you gain weight?
No. Magnesium is a mineral and supplies no calories. In clinical trials, body weight and BMI did not change under magnesium. If the scale fluctuates after you start, water, salt or daily life are usually behind it.
Can magnesium cause water retention?
There is no sign of that in the analyses reviewed, because body weight stays unchanged. Effervescent tablets bring sodium, around 109 mg per tablet in one pharmacy product. If you watch for water in your tissue, look first at salt and the form of supplement.
Does magnesium help with weight loss?
There is no evidence and no authorised claim. Magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, which is not a calorie burner. Diet, sleep and exercise remain the lever if you want to change your weight.
Which magnesium is best for losing weight?
None, because no form changes weight. The forms differ in their elemental magnesium content and tolerability. Bisglycinate is considered gentle on the stomach, and our complex combines four sources. Choose by tolerance and amount.
What is the best time of day to take magnesium?
There is no fixed time of day. Take it when you will not forget, and ideally split the daily amount across two meals. For the Magnesium Bisglycinate the label says: three capsules daily with meals.
How long does the body need to absorb magnesium?
Absorption happens in the gut during digestion, over a few hours. From food, about a third to a half is absorbed. The magnesium level in the blood, on the other hand, changes only after weeks, because the body keeps it tightly controlled. So give it several weeks of regular use.
Can I take magnesium L-threonate in the morning and magnesium bisglycinate in the evening?
Yes, that is possible. What matters is the total amount per day. The combination has no effect on the scale. We do not stock threonate; our bisglycinate delivers 360 mg of elemental magnesium in three capsules that you take with meals.
