The withanolides are the characteristic constituents of the ashwagandha plant - a group of plant compounds that serve as marker substances for standardisation. For quality they are what the alcohol content is for wine: the objective, comparable measurement. A high-quality extract states the withanolide content as a percentage - for example 5% or more.
Pure root powder, by contrast, contains only a small, naturally varying proportion, often well under one percent, depending on harvest, soil and storage. So anyone who wants a defined content should look for a standardised extract with a clear percentage figure. The content itself is a pure comparison and quality feature and says nothing about any effect.
Extract type and plant part
Traditionally the root in particular is used - it stands at the centre of centuries of Ayurvedic use. Some extracts additionally or exclusively use the leaves, which can have a different withanolide pattern. Leaf portions are not inherently bad, but a good label makes them transparent instead of concealing them.

Extract ratio and carriers: the traps in the small print
Besides the withanolide percentage, you will sometimes encounter an extract ratio such as "10:1". It indicates how much raw material the extract was obtained from - sounds impressive, but on its own says little about the withanolide content. The standardised percentage value is far more meaningful. So do not be dazzled by a high ratio figure if the decisive percentage is missing.
Also watch out for carriers: some extracts are adjusted to a certain withanolide content with plant-based carriers - that is legitimate, but should be cleanly declared. A good label makes these details verifiable instead of advertising only with buzzwords.

Ashwagandha is available above all as a capsule and as a powder. Capsules are conveniently dosed and neutral in taste - a real advantage, because the powder has a strong, slightly bitter flavour of its own that not everyone likes. Root powder can traditionally be stirred into warm (plant) milk, as has long been customary in Ayurveda. Reading the label: the three most common marketing traps
So that you can decide quickly in the shop or shopping cart, here are the typical pitfalls at a glance:
- Large milligram figure without a withanolide statement. "600 mg ashwagandha" sounds like a lot but says nothing about the concentration of the marker substances. Without a percentage figure, the most important comparison value is missing.
- High extract ratio as a dazzler. A "10:1" without a standardised withanolide percentage is hard to assess - the percentage figure is more meaningful.
- Concealed plant part. If it is not stated whether root or leaf is used, transparency is lacking. Reputable suppliers declare this.
