That also depends on the calcium compound. Some compounds (such as calcium carbonate) benefit from stomach acid, which flows more strongly with a meal; others (such as calcium citrate) are largely independent of it. As a practical rule of thumb that will rarely lead you astray: taking it with a meal is a good, well-tolerated choice for most – and you tie it to fixed mealtimes, which makes it harder to forget.
