Vitamin C and Quercetin Briefly Explained

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble vitamin that the body cannot produce on its own and must therefore obtain through food. It is abundant in peppers, citrus fruits, berries and cabbage. Vitamin C is one of the best-studied micronutrients there is, and for a number of its functions there are health claims assessed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and authorised in the EU. So it is established that vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system and vitamin C contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. It is precisely this antioxidant role that is central to understanding the combination with quercetin.

Quercetin is a secondary plant compound from the flavonoid group. It occurs naturally in onions, apples, capers, berries, kale and black tea, and gives many plants their colour and their protection against environmental influences. In dietary supplements, quercetin is usually offered as an isolated compound or as an extract (often from the Japanese pagoda tree, Sophora japonica). Important for context: there are currently no authorised health claims for quercetin in the EU. It may therefore be described, but not advertised with health-related claims of effect. We accordingly treat it here in a purely descriptive way.

Why the Two Are So Often Mentioned Together

There are several reasons why vitamin C and quercetin traditionally appear together — and none of them is simply a coincidence dreamed up by a marketing department.

Both are counted among the antioxidants. Biochemically, vitamin C and quercetin belong to the same large family of compounds that react with free radicals. While the cell-protection claim is officially authorised for vitamin C, quercetin is often described in nutritional science in the same breath as a flavonoid with antioxidant properties. The conceptual closeness is therefore obvious. In nutrition, antioxidants rarely work alone anyway — they act as a network of different compounds, an interplay you'll also find with fat-soluble vitamin E as an antioxidant.

They occur in the same foods. Anyone who eats colourful fruit and vegetables automatically takes in vitamin C and flavonoids like quercetin together. A pepper, an apple, a handful of berries never deliver a single isolated compound, but always a mixture. In this sense, the combination in a supplement mirrors what nature already brings together anyway.

There is a long tradition of mentioning the two together. Even older nutrition books considered flavonoids and vitamin C together — historically, quercetin even appeared under the now-outdated umbrella term "vitamin P". This traditional link still resonates today and explains why the pairing is perceived as a well-established duo. This is a descriptive, historical note — not evidence of any particular effect.

In short: the pairing is not purely a retail invention, but has roots in nutritional science and history. Whether this translates into a specific added benefit in a supplement is a separate question — more on that below.

How to Combine Vitamin C and Quercetin

The good news: in practical use, the combination is uncomplicated. A few points can help you get the best out of both.

Timing. Vitamin C is water-soluble, is absorbed quickly and is excreted again over the course of the day. It can be taken on an empty stomach or with a meal. Quercetin, by contrast, is better tolerated and absorbed when combined with food. In practice, it therefore makes sense to take both together with a main meal. If you use a higher amount of vitamin C, you can split it into two portions over the day, because the body only absorbs a limited amount at once.

Dosage. For vitamin C, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) states a guidance value of around 100 mg per day as a sufficient intake for adults; dietary supplements are often higher, depending on the product. Very large single amounts bring no additional benefit, because surplus vitamin C is simply excreted. For quercetin there is no official recommended intake and no statutory limit; product amounts of a few hundred milligrams are common. Follow the specific manufacturer's dosage guidance here, and when in doubt, start low.

With fat and bromelain. Because quercetin is only moderately water-soluble, it is often recommended together with a little dietary fat — a spoonful of yoghurt, some nuts, or a dish with oil are usually enough. In addition, some manufacturers combine quercetin with bromelain, an enzyme mixture from pineapple. Bromelain is traditionally added in the hope of better tolerability or absorption. This, too, is a descriptive note on product composition, not an authorised claim of effect.

Keep it practical. You don't need to time your intake in a complicated way. If you have breakfast in the morning, simply take both alongside it — done. What matters is less the exact time and more regularity: a supplement only shows its full profile if you use it consistently over weeks, not with occasional intake. And because vitamin C is water-soluble, "more is not better" clearly applies here too: the body only absorbs a limited amount per portion, and the rest is excreted.

What to Look for When Buying

There are sometimes considerable quality differences between products. These three criteria help you distinguish a good product from just any preparation.

Quercetin content. Don't just look at the capsule size, but at the actually declared amount of quercetin per daily serving. Some products advertise quercetin prominently but contain only a small amount, while other ingredients make up the bulk. A transparent figure in milligrams per recommended daily dose is a mark of quality.

Bioavailability form. Pure, isolated quercetin dissolves poorly. That's why some manufacturers rely on better-available forms or combinations — for example, quercetin together with vitamin C, with bromelain, or in specially formulated preparations. For vitamin C itself, you'll find, among others, classic ascorbic acid, buffered variants (such as calcium ascorbate, gentler on the stomach) or slow-release forms. Which form suits you depends mainly on your tolerance.

Purity and origin. A good preparation gets by with a short, traceable ingredient list and does without unnecessary fillers, colourings and release agents. Look for information on the origin of the quercetin (often extract from Sophora japonica), for laboratory analyses or batch testing, and for clear labelling of additives. An Honest Assessment

The most important thing is a clean separation between what is substantiated and what is not. For vitamin C, there are authorised, assessed claims: it contributes to the normal function of the immune system and contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. These claims hold regardless of whether you take vitamin C alone or together with quercetin.

For quercetin, the following applies: it is an interesting plant compound well represented in food, but there are currently no authorised health claims for it in the EU. We therefore cannot and may not promise any specific effects — neither for the immune system nor for allergies or other complaints. If you'd like to try quercetin, do so with realistic expectations and as a complement to a varied, plant-forward diet, not as a replacement for it.

And quite fundamentally: dietary supplements are not a substitute for a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. If you regularly take medication, are pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have an existing condition, talk to your doctor before taking quercetin products. This applies especially because flavonoids can theoretically influence how some medications are metabolised, and your individual situation needs to be assessed by a doctor.
