The body can't produce iron on its own and has to get it from food. How to Combine Iron and Vitamin B12
Iron and vitamin B12 can easily be taken together – they don't interfere with each other. Still, there are a few points that will help you get more out of the combination.
Take Iron with Vitamin C
The biggest lever here concerns iron: vitamin C significantly improves the absorption of plant-based (non-haem) iron from the gut. A glass of orange juice with an iron-rich meal, or an iron supplement taken alongside a vitamin C source, is therefore a smart move. Iron is best absorbed on an empty stomach, but this can irritate sensitive stomachs. A good compromise is taking it about an hour before or two hours after a meal, combined with vitamin C. Coffee, black tea, and calcium-rich foods or supplements inhibit iron absorption – try to leave a gap of one to two hours around those. Vitamin B12 is more straightforward when it comes to timing and can be taken flexibly at any time of day, since it doesn't get in iron's way in that respect. People eating a vegetarian diet, older adults, or those with certain gastrointestinal conditions can also have an increased need, since gut absorption declines. With a balanced mixed diet that includes animal-based foods, on the other hand, supply is usually sufficient.
