This is exactly where the most common mix-up happens. If the packaging says "2000 mg magnesium citrate", that's the weight of the entire compound. The proportion of actual magnesium within it is considerably smaller. But for your body, only this elemental proportion counts, because only it contributes to magnesium's known functions.

A worked example makes this tangible. In magnesium citrate, the pure mineral makes up only around 16 percent of the total weight, depending on the form. So 2000 mg of magnesium citrate works out to roughly 320 mg of elemental magnesium – the large remainder is citric acid. With magnesium oxide, the ratio is reversed: here the mineral accounts for around 60 percent of the weight, because the oxygen partner is very light.

That's why a claim like "high-dose, 2000 mg" looks impressive at first glance but says little without the elemental value. Two products with an identical milligram figure on the front can deliver you completely different amounts of actual magnesium. Stating the compound weight is marketing – stating the elemental content is the honest figure.

Picture two tubs side by side. Both display "750 mg magnesium" prominently on the front. Tub A uses magnesium oxide, tub B magnesium bisglycinate. Calculated with typical proportions, the oxide capsule delivers around 450 mg of elemental magnesium from 750 mg of substance, while the bisglycinate capsule delivers only about 100 mg from the same amount of substance. On the front of the pack, both look equally strong – in reality, the mineral content differs by more than fourfold. Anyone who reads only the large number is making a decision blind. Only a look at the elemental value in the nutrition table makes the two products comparable at all.

How much elemental magnesium is in the common forms

The following figures are rough guide values for the elemental proportion of the weight of the respective compound. They help you quickly make sense of a number on a label.

Magnesium oxide: around 60 percent

Important: a high elemental content says nothing about absorption in the body. Magnesium oxide does deliver a lot of mineral per gram, but is considered less soluble; readily soluble organic forms such as citrate or bisglycinate often score well on tolerability despite their lower content. For you as a buyer, this means: always consider the elemental content and the chosen compound together. A product with a high elemental value is economical to dose, while a product with a readily soluble form may be more pleasant to take.
