Picture yourself standing in the bathroom, turning a new tub of omega-3 over in your hand and reading “pure fish oil”. An open-and-shut case. But the tricky products are the ones with “plant-based” or “natural” printed large on the front – and a gelatine capsule hiding in the fine print. Why vegan supplements take more detective work than food

With a piece of cheese or a schnitzel, the animal origin is obvious. In capsules and tablets it hides in components hardly anyone has on their radar: in the capsule shell, in the carrier, in the coating or in the origin of a single vitamin. An extract from grape seeds is 100% plant-based – and can still sit inside a shell made of beef or pork gelatine. Four ingredients account for more than 90% of all “not vegan” cases. Once you have these four in mind, you are practically home and dry:

Vitamin D3 is particularly deceptive: it is chemically identical whether it comes from sheep’s wool or lichen – only the raw-material source decides whether it counts as “vegan” or not. Alongside these four classics, there are two further places where animal-derived matter hides: coatings and glazing agents (beeswax, shellac – the latter obtained from the secretion of scale insects) and individual carriers. Vitamin beadlets, too – tiny vitamin spheres encased in a shell, for example with fat-soluble vitamin A or D – can contain gelatine as the carrier material. What happens in the body – and why some nutrients matter for those living vegan

A purely plant-based diet is rich in fibre, secondary plant compounds and many vitamins. A few nutrients, however, occur almost exclusively in animal-based foods or are less well available from plants – here a targeted look pays off:

  • Vitamin B12 is produced by microorganisms and is found practically only in animal products. It contributes to normal energy metabolism and to the normal function of the nervous system – on a purely plant-based diet it is regarded as the critical nutrient par excellence. The good news first: the market has caught up. For practically every nutrient and every dosage form there is an animal-free version – often without any compromise on quality or dosage. Algae oil supplies DHA and EPA directly from the very source from which fish obtain their omega-3. Vegan vitamin D3 comes from lichen and is chemically the same molecule as the one from sheep’s wool. The vast majority of vitamins and minerals are synthetically or plant-derived anyway and are therefore unproblematic. Well established and textbook knowledge is that vitamin B12 must be supplemented on a purely plant-based diet – there is broad consensus on this in nutritional science. Beyond that, researchers are investigating how efficiently the body converts the plant-based omega-3 precursor ALA into the long-chain fatty acids EPA and DHA; the data point to a highly individual and, overall, rather low conversion rate, which is why algae oil is discussed as a direct source. For iron and zinc, research is concerned with bioavailability from plant sources and the influence of accompanying substances such as phytates and vitamin C. These are lines of research – not a promise of efficacy for any single product.

Is vitamin D3 always animal-derived?
