When it comes to the thyroid, two names come up again and again: iodine and selenium. The two trace elements are often referred to as a duo because they play a role at different points within the same system. Iodine is the raw material the thyroid uses to build its hormones. Selenium is a component of enzymes that are active in the thyroid. Iodine and Selenium Briefly Introduced
Iodine is an essential trace element that the body cannot produce itself. It must be obtained through food. The thyroid stores iodine and uses it as the central building block for its hormones. Good sources include saltwater fish, seaweed in controlled amounts, dairy products, and above all iodised table salt. According to the German Nutrition Society (DGE), Germany is considered a region with a tendency towards low iodine supply, because the soil is comparatively low in iodine.
Selenium is also an essential trace element. It's a component of what are known as selenoproteins – proteins that take on specific tasks in metabolism. Some of these are active specifically in the thyroid. Selenium is found in fish, meat, eggs, nuts and legumes. Why Iodine and Selenium Matter Together
The reason this duo is so often mentioned together lies in the recognised functions of both substances. According to the EU Health Claims Register: iodine contributes to normal production of thyroid hormones and to normal thyroid function. And: selenium contributes to normal thyroid function. Both statements are scientifically assessed and officially approved. However, they describe exclusively the maintenance of normal functions, not the treatment of a disease.
Put simply: iodine supplies the raw material for the thyroid's hormones. Selenium is part of the enzyme system that plays a role in thyroid metabolism. So both work on the same organ, but at different points. That's exactly why it makes sense to look at the supply of both trace elements together, rather than focusing on just one. How to Combine Iodine and Selenium Correctly
With trace elements, the guiding principle is this: the right amount counts, not as much as possible. Both substances have a clearly defined range in which they're sensible, and both have upper limits.
Iodine: A Sensible Amount
As a guideline for adults, the DGE cites an intake value of around 200 µg of iodine per day; the requirement is higher for pregnant and breastfeeding women. The largest share should come from your normal diet: saltwater fish, dairy products, and consistent use of iodised table salt cover an important portion. Food supplements typically provide iodine in the range of about 100 to 150 µg per serving – as a supplement to your diet, not a replacement for it.
Selenium: A Sensible Amount
For selenium, the DGE provides estimated values for an adequate intake: around 70 µg per day for men and 60 µg per day for women. Here too, diet is the first choice. Thinking of Both Together
If you want to supplement both trace elements, add up what you already get through your diet and what a supplement provides on top of that. Combined thyroid products often use moderate amounts of both substances within the recommended ranges. The goal is a solid baseline supply, not high dosing. What You Should Watch Out For
Precisely because the thyroid is a sensitive system, a few points are especially important.
Stick to the upper limits. For iodine, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) recommends no more than about 100 µg per day from food supplements, in addition to dietary intake; the tolerable upper intake level derived by EFSA for adults is 600 µg of iodine per day. For selenium, EFSA has set a tolerable upper intake level of 255 µg per day for adults; the BfR recommends significantly lower additional amounts for food supplements. These limits apply to the total from all sources – that is, diet plus supplements. More is not better with either substance; on the contrary, a persistently excessive intake can be problematic.
Don't dose high indiscriminately. Unlike some vitamins, the sensible range for iodine and selenium is comparatively narrow. There isn't a huge buffer between too little and too much. That's why supplements with extremely high amounts are rarely a good idea.
Get it checked by a doctor if you have a thyroid condition. This is the most important point. If you have a known thyroid condition, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an underactive or overactive thyroid, or if you take thyroid medication, do not take iodine and selenium on your own initiative. Iodine in particular can have an unfavourable effect in certain thyroid conditions. Whether and in what amount supplementation is right for you is a decision for a doctor to make. Talk to your doctor before you start. The same applies during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as with existing underlying conditions.
Watch out for interactions. If you take medication, always discuss supplementation with your treating doctor's office or your pharmacy. This applies especially to thyroid medications.
Putting It Honestly
Iodine and selenium are a sensible duo when it comes to supporting normal thyroid function as part of a balanced diet. The approved claims are clear: iodine contributes to normal production of thyroid hormones and to normal thyroid function, and selenium contributes to normal thyroid function. These statements promise no more than that – but also no less.
What the duo is not: a remedy for thyroid disorders. Neither iodine nor selenium is a substitute for a diagnosis or medical treatment. If you have symptoms or suspect a thyroid condition, the right path is to see a doctor, not the supplement shelf. For healthy adults, the rule is: if you eat a balanced diet, use iodised table salt, and regularly eat fish, dairy products and nuts, you'll usually already cover your needs for both trace elements well.
