How Nutrients Relate to Cognitive Function and the Nervous System
The brain is metabolically active and constantly uses a lot of energy – relative to its weight, it claims a surprisingly large share of daily energy expenditure. Nerve cells communicate via messenger substances, relay electrical signals, and must be constantly repaired and supplied. Micronutrients are involved as cofactors in many of these processes: they help, for example, to make energy from food usable, to form messenger substances such as serotonin or dopamine, to protect nerve fibres, or to shield cells from oxidative stress.
You can picture it like clockwork: many small gears have to mesh for the whole thing to run smoothly. If one of these building blocks is missing over a longer period, it can impair normal function – often gradually and non-specifically, for example as declining resilience or a low mood. That's why it's not one or two "miracle nutrients" that are decisive for cognitive performance and the nerves, but a solid overall picture made up of several vitamins and minerals. Minerals for Cognition and the Nerves
Iron
Iron is involved in oxygen transport in the blood – and the brain needs oxygen in abundance. Iron contributes to normal cognitive function. Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies worldwide and disproportionately affects menstruating women, pregnant women, and people on a purely plant-based diet. Good sources are meat, legumes, oats and wholegrains; plant-based iron is absorbed considerably better together with vitamin C, while coffee or black tea taken directly with a meal can inhibit absorption. Zinc
Zinc is involved in numerous enzyme reactions and in cell division. Zinc contributes to normal cognitive function. It's found in meat, cheese, nuts, seeds, legumes and wholegrain products. Because plant-based food sometimes provides less readily usable zinc – phytates in grains and legumes can slow absorption – a closer look is worthwhile with a one-sided diet. Soaking, sprouting or fermenting (as with sourdough bread) improve availability.
Iodine
Iodine is a building block of thyroid hormones, which help control the entire metabolism and brain development. Iodine contributes to normal cognitive function. In Germany, adequate iodine supply cannot be taken for granted – iodised salt, saltwater fish and dairy products are important sources. Anyone who cooks a lot from scratch and eats few processed foods should consciously choose iodised salt, since non-iodised table salt and many ready-made products contribute little to supply.
Magnesium
Magnesium is involved in nerve signal transmission and muscle function and plays a role in psychological balance. Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function. Good sources are wholegrains, nuts, legumes, pumpkin seeds and green vegetables. Magnesium is frequently discussed especially in connection with stress and lots of exercise – but the authorised claim relates to normal psychological function, not to a performance boost. Anyone who sweats heavily or eats little wholegrain tends to have a higher requirement. B Vitamins: The Nerve Group
The B vitamins are often called "nerve vitamins" – and indeed, several of them at once are authorised for the nervous system. Specifically: thiamine, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folate and biotin contribute to normal function of the nervous system. They act as cofactors in energy metabolism and in the formation of messenger substances. Because they're needed in so many places, and the body can barely store most of them, regular intake through diet is important.
Most B vitamins are found in wholegrains, legumes, vegetables, eggs and dairy products. Thiamine, for example, is found in wholegrain cereals and legumes, folate mainly in leafy green vegetables and cabbage, and biotin in eggs and nuts. Vitamin B12 plays a special role: it occurs practically only in animal foods. Anyone on a vegan diet should specifically supplement B12 to ensure adequate supply – there's no way around a supplement or fortified foods here. Vitamin C for Psychological Function
Vitamin C is far more than a "cold vitamin." Vitamin C contributes to normal psychological function and additionally protects cells from oxidative stress. It's found abundantly in peppers, berries, citrus fruits, broccoli and cabbage. Because vitamin C is sensitive to heat and light, the most is retained in fresh, gently prepared or raw vegetables and fruit. Another practical advantage: vitamin C improves the absorption of plant-based iron – so the two complement each other well, for example oats with berries, or lentils with a squeeze of lemon. Diet, Sleep and Exercise as the Foundation
As worthwhile as it is to look at individual nutrients, the load-bearing foundation for concentration and a stable nervous system is lifestyle and diet as a whole. No product makes up for persistent lack of sleep, chronic stress, or lack of exercise. Anyone who wants to work on their concentration usually gets more out of these fundamentals than out of any single capsule.
- Eat a balanced diet: A colourful, predominantly plant-forward diet with wholegrains, vegetables, legumes, nuts and – depending on your diet type – fish, eggs or dairy products supplies most of the nutrients mentioned on its own. Anyone who additionally pays attention to good-quality fats and regular meals keeps blood sugar more stable and prevents energy dips.
- Sleep regularly and enough: During sleep, the brain processes impressions and recovers. Lack of sleep almost always shows up first in concentration and mood.
- Get moving: Physical activity boosts circulation and is one of the best-documented factors for mental freshness in everyday life – often a brisk walk is already enough.
- Drink enough: Even mild dehydration can affect attention. Water or unsweetened tea are ideal companions throughout the day.
- Schedule breaks: Short, deliberate pauses relieve your attention and help prevent the afternoon slump.

When Supplementing Makes Sense
Dietary supplements are no substitute for a balanced diet – but there are situations in which targeted supplementation can make sense:
- A confirmed deficiency: For example, an iron or B12 deficiency confirmed by a blood test. Medical guidance is advisable here, including to determine the right dosage and duration.
- Certain diet types: With a vegan diet, vitamin B12 is especially critical, and sometimes iron, zinc and iodine too.

- A one-sided diet: Anyone who, for reasons of time, lack of appetite, or intolerances, permanently eats a diet that's not very varied.

Micronutrients are a precondition for the brain and nerves to be able to work normally – no more, but also no less. A real benefit arises above all where a deficiency or under-supply exists.
In practice, that means: strengthen the foundation first – eat a balanced diet, sleep, exercise. If you suspect a deficiency or are in a particular life phase, it's worth looking at targeted nutrients, with medical clarification if in doubt. Anyone taking dietary supplements long-term and at high doses should not do so on their own, since too much can also have unwanted effects. That way, dealing with nutrients stays what it should be: a solid building block for concentration and the nerves – assessed realistically and without exaggerated promises.
