Some reserves were already tapped during pregnancy, and normal blood loss during birth adds to that.

The most important principle: a balanced, varied diet covers the foundation. Food supplements aren't a substitute for a varied diet, but a possible building block when individual nutrients run low. Whether, and what, to supplement depends heavily on individual reserves, breastfeeding status and any pre-existing conditions — this is best clarified with your accompanying midwife or gynaecologist, with a blood test if needed.

Iron — after blood loss

Blood loss during birth, along with a supply potentially already strained during pregnancy, make iron topic number one. Several EU claims are approved for this nutrient: iron contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and iron contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body. Whether an iron deficiency is present, though, is only shown by a blood test — iron shouldn't be taken on a hunch or in a high dose without medical recommendation, since oversupply can be problematic.

Iodine — for the thyroid and milk

Iodine is among the critical nutrients during breastfeeding, because some of it is passed on to the child through breast milk, and Germany is considered an iodine-deficient region. Approved claims include: iodine contributes to normal thyroid function and to normal production of thyroid hormones and iodine contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. With thyroid conditions, however, taking iodine isn't automatically advisable and should definitely be coordinated with a doctor.

DHA — omega-3 for the breastfed child

The long-chain omega-3 fatty acid DHA passes into breast milk in breastfeeding mothers. The EU permits a specific claim on this: maternal intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) contributes to the normal brain and eye development of the breastfed infant. This claim applies on the condition that, in addition to the recommended omega-3 intake for adults, 200 mg of DHA is consumed daily. DHA is found chiefly in oily sea fish; anyone who eats little fish can consider supplementing — ideally after discussing it with a doctor.

Folate — blood formation and tissue

Folate remains relevant after birth too, for instance for blood formation and tissue regeneration. The fitting claims are folate contributes to normal blood formation and folate contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Many mothers continue a combination product from pregnancy into breastfeeding — whether that's necessary in an individual case is best decided together with medical guidance.

Vitamin D, calcium, magnesium and B12

Further nutrients play a role for bones and muscles. So: vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones, and magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. For women on a purely plant-based diet, vitamin B12 is also important, for which the claim applies: vitamin B12 contributes to normal red blood cell formation.

Who does this matter most for?

Not every postpartum woman has the same needs. Women should pay particular attention if they're breastfeeding, if the birth involved heavier blood loss, if they eat a vegetarian or vegan diet, or if they've had multiples. Closely spaced births can also strain reserves. In all these situations, it's worth taking a targeted look at individual values — rather than taking many supplements at once across the board.

With existing conditions, during pregnancy, or when it comes to products for the child, the rule is always: clarify medically first, then act. Children have entirely different needs, and recommendations for adults can't simply be carried over.
