What vitamin B12 does in the body
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is a water-soluble vitamin that the body needs for central processes. According to the authorised EU claims, vitamin B12 contributes to normal red blood cell formation and to the normal function of the nervous system. It also has a role in energy metabolism and in the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. These aren't marketing promises, but factually described functions of an essential nutrient.
Essential means: the body cannot produce B12 itself. It depends on intake through food. Bacteria in the human large intestine do produce small amounts of B12, but this happens below the point where the vitamin is absorbed - so in practice it does nothing for a person's supply.
Where B12 originally comes from

For plant-based eating, this has an inconvenient consequence: in the modern, hygienically clean food chain, these bacteria hardly ever end up on our vegetables anymore. What used to be eaten incidentally via contaminated water or unwashed roots no longer happens today. That's not a weakness of plant-based eating itself, but a consequence of our clean food production.
Plant foods and the B12 myth
Lists of supposedly vegan B12 sources keep circulating. A closer look is worthwhile, because this is where marketing and the facts part ways.
Algae and spirulina
Spirulina, chlorella and nori contain substances that look like B12 in the lab. A large part of these, however, are so-called B12 analogues (pseudo-cobalamins), which the human body cannot use like real vitamin B12. Some analogues can even hinder the absorption of the real vitamin. Algae are therefore not suitable as a reliable source - chlorella shows widely fluctuating values depending on the batch, which makes planned supply impossible.
Fermented foods
Sauerkraut, tempeh, miso or kombucha are frequently mentioned because bacteria are involved in fermentation. In practice, the amounts are tiny, fluctuate widely, and partly consist of analogues too. Fermented foods are a valuable part of a varied diet, but no substitute for a reliably secured B12 supply.
Dried mushrooms and sea buckthorn
Some edible mushrooms and sea buckthorn berries contain traces of real B12, but in such small and unreliable amounts that no supply can be built on them. You would have to eat unrealistic quantities, day after day, with an unpredictable result.
Fortified foods
The only plant-based exception with real, usable B12 is fortified products: some plant-based drinks, breakfast cereals or nutritional yeast flakes with added vitamin B12. Here the cobalamin comes from bacterial production and is bioavailable. The catch: the added amounts are usually low, and anyone who doesn't plan them in consciously and daily rarely reaches their requirement through this alone. It's worth checking the nutrition label, because not every oat or soy drink is fortified.

Honestly, that's not a weakness that needs hiding. A well-planned plant-based diet is rich in every other respect - in fibre, secondary plant compounds and unsaturated fats. That's why both smaller daily amounts and larger doses at longer intervals work. Which option suits you depends on preferences and daily routine. The forms commonly available are methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin; both are used by the body.
Anyone who wants to know their levels can have them measured by a doctor. More informative than the plain serum value is the combination with markers such as holotranscobalamin or methylmalonic acid, because they better reflect functional status.
