But which composition actually makes sense, what should you look for when buying, and when is an electrolyte product even worth it? What Are Electrolytes and Who Needs Them?
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge in the body and are dissolved in blood, cells, and the fluid between cells. The main ones are sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride. They regulate fluid balance, nerve signal transmission, and muscle contraction. The body normally keeps their concentration in very precise balance, partly through the kidneys.
We lose electrolytes through sweat, above all sodium and chloride, and in smaller amounts potassium and magnesium too. Exactly how much depends on how much you sweat and your individual sweat composition. That's why electrolytes really matter in three situations: during intense or prolonged exercise with heavy sweating, in heat and high outdoor temperatures, and with ongoing heavy sweating in everyday life or at work. Before comparing products, it helps to take a closer look at the individual minerals. They each serve different functions, and not every product contains all of them in a meaningful amount.
Sodium
Sodium is the electrolyte lost most heavily through sweat, and it's also the most important one for fluid balance. It helps the body hold on to water and supports fluid absorption in the gut. This is exactly why sports drinks deliberately contain sodium (usually as table salt, sodium chloride). There are no EU health claims under the Health Claims Regulation for sodium and chloride, so here we can only describe their factual role as a macro-mineral.
Potassium
Potassium is the most important electrolyte inside cells and sodium's counterpart. Good natural sources include potatoes, legumes, vegetables, and fruit such as bananas. In electrolyte products it's usually only present in small amounts, since needs are generally well covered by dairy products, mineral water, and green vegetables.
Chloride
Chloride almost always occurs together with sodium as table salt, and it's likewise lost through sweat. It plays a role in fluid balance and acid-base balance. As with sodium, there's no separately advertised EU health claim for chloride in the electrolyte context, so the description here stays purely factual.
What to Look for When Buying Electrolytes
Electrolyte products differ less in price than in the quality of their formula. These criteria will help you choose.
Sensible Composition and Ratio
A good product mirrors the losses that actually occur. Since sodium is the main mineral lost through sweat, it should clearly take center stage. Many cheap effervescent tablets, by contrast, contain mostly magnesium and potassium but barely any sodium, which makes them less effective for replacing sweat losses. Make sure all the relevant minerals are declared in traceable amounts, not just as a token pinch that dresses up the marketing copy.
Sugar Content and Sweeteners
During long endurance efforts, some carbohydrate can make sense, but for everyday use a lot of sugar is unnecessary. Check the nutrition label: some sports drinks deliver as much sugar per serving as a soft drink. Sugar-free versions often rely on sweeteners such as sucralose or steviol glycosides. Whether you want these is a matter of taste, but they must be declared on the label either way.
Dosage per Serving
What matters isn't the amount per 100 grams of powder, but the amount in the portion you actually drink. Work out how many milligrams of sodium, potassium, and magnesium actually end up in a mixed glass or a full bottle. Only then can you fairly compare products and match them against your own losses.
Format: Powder or Tabs
Powders and sticks are usually easier to dose flexibly and can be more concentrated, while effervescent or lozenge tablets are more practical on the go. Tabs sometimes contain anti-caking agents and other additives, while powder is often more purist. For most recreational athletes, plain water is completely sufficient for sessions under roughly 60 to 90 minutes. Electrolytes become more relevant during long, sweat-heavy efforts, in the heat, or when several sessions follow each other in quick succession. In that case, it can make sense to sip an electrolyte drink in small amounts throughout the session rather than drinking large quantities at once. After exercise, a combination of fluid, sodium, and a meal supports replenishment. It's hard to give a blanket milligram target, because sweat volume and salt loss vary a lot from person to person. If you sweat heavily and saltily (visible as white salt rings on your clothing), you're likely to benefit more from extra sodium.
An Honest Take: Usually Unnecessary for Everyday Life
As prominent as electrolyte products are in marketing, the everyday reality is far more sober: with a balanced diet of vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, dairy products, and normal salt intake, the electrolyte needs of healthy people are generally covered. The body regulates minor fluctuations very reliably on its own. A sports drink during a walk or in an air-conditioned office therefore usually brings no measurable benefit, just extra calories or sweeteners.
Targeted electrolytes make sense where losses are genuinely large: long endurance sport, periods of heat, physically demanding work, or situations involving significant fluid loss. And with persistent symptoms such as frequent cramping, dizziness, or heart palpitations, the cause belongs in a doctor's hands, not masked with a scoop of powder. Electrolyte products are a tool for specific situations, not an everyday drink for everyone.
