Folic Acid or Folate – What's the Difference?

In supplements, it's often found as a calcium or glucosamine salt (for example under brand names like Quatrefolic or Metafolin). Methylfolate is usually more expensive than classic folic acid.
Discussions around methylfolate often bring up the so-called MTHFR gene variant. The MTHFR enzyme is involved in converting folic acid into its active form, and in part of the population it works somewhat more slowly due to a genetic variant. This is often taken to mean that these people absolutely need methylfolate. The scientific evidence is more nuanced than a lot of marketing claims suggest: even with an MTHFR variant, the body can still make good use of classic folic acid. Methylfolate can be a sensible alternative, but it's not a must. If you're unsure, it's best to clarify the matter with a doctor rather than relying on marketing alone.

2. The dosage in micrograms (µg). Folic acid is measured in micrograms. Common supplements contain 400 µg or 800 µg per daily dose. Make sure the dosage is clearly stated per capsule or tablet, not just per several units.
3. A sensible combination with B12 and B6. Folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin B6 work closely together in the body's metabolism, especially in breaking down homocysteine. Many high-quality supplements combine these three vitamins for that reason. That makes biological sense – vitamin B12 in particular is worth considering alongside blood formation.
