Iron sulfate is the affordable classic with a high elemental iron content, but it often causes gastrointestinal discomfort. Iron bisglycinate is chelated and better tolerated by many people, though it contains less elemental iron per milligram of compound. Anyone looking into iron supplements quickly runs into two names: iron sulfate and iron bisglycinate. One is the tried-and-tested, budget-friendly classic — the other a modern, more stomach-friendly alternative. But what's actually behind these terms, and which form is the right choice for whom? In this guide, we take an objective look at both forms of iron: how they differ, why tolerability comes up so often, and what really matters when it comes to taking and buying iron.
First, the most important point: iron is an essential mineral that the body needs for, among other things, forming blood. A supplement only makes sense, though, once a deficiency has actually been confirmed. Supplementing iron on the off chance is not a good idea — more on that later.
Iron Sulfate: The Budget-Friendly Classic
Iron sulfate (ferrous sulfate) is the iron compound that has been used longest and most widely. In this form, iron is present as ferrous iron (Fe²⁺), which the body can generally absorb well. Iron sulfate is inexpensive to produce, widely available, and found in countless products — from pharmaceutical drugs to dietary supplements.
One practical advantage: iron sulfate has a comparatively high proportion of elemental iron. This refers to the actual iron content — the part that counts for the body. Roughly a fifth of iron sulfate's weight consists of pure iron. That sounds efficient at first glance.
The catch lies in tolerability. Iron sulfate is known to irritate the digestive tract in many people. Typical complaints include nausea, a feeling of fullness, stomach discomfort, constipation, or — less commonly — diarrhea. A dark discoloration of the stool is also possible and harmless in itself. In practice, these side effects often lead people to take the supplement irregularly or stop altogether. And an iron supplement that isn't taken can't do its job.
Iron Bisglycinate: Chelated and Usually Milder
Iron bisglycinate belongs to the group of so-called chelated iron compounds. Put simply, the iron atom here is enclosed by two molecules of the amino acid glycine. This shell makes the iron more stable and means that less of it is present in free form within the digestive tract.
That's exactly why iron bisglycinate is often described as better tolerated. Because less unbound iron irritates the stomach and intestinal lining, many users report noticeably milder digestive complaints — or none at all. For people who couldn't tolerate iron sulfate, this is often a noticeable difference.
In the interest of honesty: the proportion of elemental iron per milligram of compound is lower for iron bisglycinate than for iron sulfate. That doesn't automatically mean less iron gets absorbed, though — the chelated form is considered well bioavailable, so the lower raw content can even out in practice. Reputable products state the elemental iron content anyway, which makes it possible to compare products directly.
The Difference in Detail
To properly compare both forms, it's worth looking at three levels: absorption, tolerability, and elemental iron content.
Absorption (Bioavailability)
Both forms supply the body with ferrous iron, which is generally well absorbed. With iron sulfate, absorption can be inhibited more strongly by other components in food — such as coffee, tea, dairy products, or certain plant compounds. The chelate shell of iron bisglycinate is meant to make the iron somewhat more robust against these influences. Overall, though, both forms fall within a usable range of bioavailability — the difference isn't as large as some marketing suggests.
Tolerability
This is where the most practically relevant difference lies. Iron sulfate noticeably irritates the digestive tract in many people, while most experience iron bisglycinate as milder. This is the main reason the chelated form has become so popular in recent years. Important: tolerability is individual. Some people get along fine with iron sulfate, while others are sensitive even to bisglycinate.
Elemental Iron Content
Iron sulfate scores with a higher raw proportion of elemental iron, while iron bisglycinate is lower here. When comparing two products, then, what matters isn't the name of the compound but the "elemental iron" figure per daily dose stated on the packaging. Only that number tells you how much iron you're actually getting.
What This Means in Practice — and When Buying
There's no blanket answer along the lines of "form X is always better." A more useful approach is this rule of thumb:
- Tolerability comes first: If your stomach and gut react sensitively to iron supplements, or you've had bad experiences with iron sulfate, you'll often find iron bisglycinate the more comfortable option.
- Price and availability come first: If you tolerate iron sulfate well, the classic option gives you an affordable, well-established choice — more expensive isn't automatically better.
- Always check the elemental iron content: Compare products by the stated amount of elemental iron, not by the weight of the compound.
- Dose with care: More iron is not better. The right amount depends on your established needs and should be agreed on with a doctor.

Taking Iron: How to Get More Out of It
Regardless of the form, taking it correctly also determines how well iron is absorbed:
- Ideally on an empty stomach: Iron tends to be absorbed better on an empty stomach. If you react sensitively, you can take it with a small meal instead — this may reduce absorption slightly but improves tolerability.

- Keep your distance from inhibitors: Coffee, black and green tea, milk, dairy products, and calcium-rich foods can slow absorption. Try to leave a gap of one to two hours where possible.
- Consistency: Iron stores fill up slowly. More important than a single high dose is continuous, well-tolerated intake over the period recommended by your doctor.
The goal behind this is always the same: a good iron supply supports key body functions. Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body, and contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
An Honest Assessment
As useful as comparing the iron forms is, the decisive point lies elsewhere: an iron supplement belongs exclusively in the hands of people with a confirmed iron deficiency. Whether a deficiency is present can only be reliably clarified with a blood test, usually via the ferritin level. Symptoms such as tiredness can have many causes and are not, on their own, proof of iron deficiency.
The reason for this caution should be taken seriously: unlike with water-soluble vitamins, the body doesn't simply excrete excess iron. Ongoing, unnecessary intake can lead to overload and put a strain on the body. That's why expert bodies explicitly warn against taking iron without an established need. If you suspect a deficiency, have your levels checked by a doctor and work out the supplement and dosage together — the choice between bisglycinate and sulfate is then the second step.
In short: both iron bisglycinate and iron sulfate are legitimate ways to correct an existing deficiency. Bisglycinate wins out mainly on tolerability, sulfate on price. But the real decision point isn't the form — it's whether there's actually a need in the first place.
