Testosterone is widely seen as the "male hormone" – yet it does far more than most people assume, and it matters for women too. Muscle metabolism, bone density, mood, libido: the body normally keeps the level within a sensible range on its own, as long as the underlying conditions are right. One key part of those conditions is a supply of certain nutrients. What testosterone does in the body
Testosterone is a sex hormone from the androgen group. In men, most of it is produced in the testes, with a smaller share coming from the adrenal cortex; in women, it is made in the ovaries and adrenal glands, in clearly smaller amounts. The hormone is involved in developing and maintaining muscle and bone tissue and influences blood formation, fat metabolism, and sexual desire.
The testosterone level is not a fixed value. It fluctuates over the course of the day – usually peaking in the morning – and changes over the course of a lifetime. From around age 30 onwards, it declines slowly and continuously in men, which is a normal part of ageing. Distinctly low levels accompanied by symptoms should, however, be medically assessed, since a range of different causes can be behind them.
Which nutrients contribute to a normal testosterone level
The most important point up front: no single nutrient is a "testosterone switch". The body needs several building blocks working together, and intake becomes relevant above all when there's an inadequate supply. These are the nutrients linked to hormone production.
Zinc – the central mineral
When it comes to testosterone and diet, there's almost no way around zinc. Zinc is an essential trace element and is responsible for the only authorised EU health claim in this context: zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood. Beyond that, zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction as well as to normal macronutrient metabolism.
Good sources of zinc include meat, cheese, eggs, whole-grain products, and nuts and pumpkin seeds. Because plant foods contain phytates that can inhibit absorption, people eating a purely plant-based diet need to pay a little more attention to keeping their intake in view. As a guide, the German Nutrition Society (DGE) puts the figure for men at around 11 to 16 mg per day depending on phytate intake, and around 7 to 10 mg for women. The body cannot store zinc in large amounts, so regular intake throughout the day matters more than occasional large portions. Heavy sweating during sports also increases losses somewhat, so active people should pay attention to zinc-rich foods.
Vitamin D – more than just a bone vitamin
Vitamin D plays a special role because the body produces it itself in the skin on exposure to sunlight. During the darker months, that barely works at our latitudes, which is why part of the population is suboptimally supplied. Among other things, vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function and to the normal function of the immune system. A link between vitamin D status and hormone production is being scientifically studied; there is no authorised health claim directly relating to testosterone levels for it. Magnesium – a building block for muscles and protein synthesis
Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions. It contributes to normal muscle function, to normal protein synthesis, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. People who are physically active in particular have an increased need. Whole grains, legumes, nuts, green vegetables, and mineral water are rich in magnesium. There is no direct health claim relating to testosterone levels for magnesium – but it is a sensible building block of a diet that supports the hormone balance overall.
Vitamin B6 and selenium
Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity and is therefore another relevant building block. It is found in meat, fish, whole-grain products, and many types of vegetables. The trace element selenium contributes to normal spermatogenesis and is found especially in Brazil nuts, fish, and eggs. Neither replaces a balanced diet, but both sensibly round out the nutrient profile relevant to reproduction.
Diet and lifestyle as the foundation

Body weight and blood sugar
Marked overweight, especially a lot of abdominal fat, is often associated with lower testosterone values. Strongly fluctuating blood sugar levels also put a strain on metabolism. A handful of pumpkin seeds or Brazil nuts as a snack provides zinc and selenium, a breakfast of oats, nuts, and a little cheese covers magnesium and zinc, and oily sea fish brings vitamin D and good fats. If you get little sun in winter, you can have your vitamin D status checked medically and supplement in a targeted way if needed.
Aim for a good spread across the week rather than relying on individual "superfoods". Coffee and alcohol in large amounts, as well as heavily processed products high in sugar, tend to work against the whole picture. A colourful plate with vegetables, legumes, high-quality protein, and good fats is therefore the most reliable foundation – considerably more reliable than any single preparation.
What food supplements can do – and what they can't
Food supplements are foods. They can help close a targeted nutrient gap, for example with a demonstrably low zinc or vitamin D supply. But they are not medicines and do not artificially raise a normal level. You should view products advertised with "booster", muscle, or potency promises critically: a normal, healthy body regulates its own hormone balance once the basic supply is right.
Supplementing makes sense above all when diet doesn't ensure adequate intake or when there's an increased need. Stick to the recommended amounts, since zinc and selenium in particular should not be overdosed on a lasting basis. When in doubt: better to have your status checked medically than to dose high on suspicion.
When you should seek medical advice
Persistent fatigue, lack of drive, declining libido, muscle loss, or mood swings can have many causes – a low testosterone level is only one of them. Such symptoms should be medically assessed, not treated on your own with preparations. Only a blood test can show whether there is actually a deficiency or a hormonal disorder.
