Between vending-machine coffee and a cold canteen, nutrition often falls by the wayside. But which nutrients do you really need in shift work, and how do you look after yourself sensibly when day and night are swapped around?
Why night shifts throw your supply out of balance
Humans are daytime creatures. A finely tuned internal pacemaker, the so-called circadian rhythm, governs not just sleep and wakefulness but also hormone release, digestion and metabolism. Night work turns this system on its head: you eat when your gut is set to rest, and try to sleep when your body actually wants to power up.
The result is irregular meals, cravings for quick, sugary food in the middle of the night, and a chronic sleep deficit. Reaching for sweets, ready-made snacks and a third coffee is only human, but it delivers a lot of empty calories and little of what the body needs under strain. Approved EU claims put it plainly: vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and vitamin B12 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Likewise, riboflavin contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and vitamin B6 contributes to normal psychological function. Anyone who often reaches for a one-sided diet on shift quickly develops gaps in exactly these vitamins. Vitamin B12 deserves particular attention here, since it's found almost exclusively in animal foods and can run short on a plant-heavy diet regardless of shift work.
Vitamin D: the sunshine vitamin without the sun
No nutrient hits night workers as directly as vitamin D. That makes it one of the obvious building blocks for anyone who repeatedly pushes their body against its internal clock. Iron: often overlooked, especially in women

Two claims are approved for food supplements, each tied to an intake amount: melatonin contributes to the alleviation of subjective feelings of jet lag (at a minimum of 0.5 mg per day) and melatonin contributes to the reduction of time to fall asleep (at a minimum of 1 mg shortly before going to sleep). Since a shift change challenges the body in a way similar to crossing time zones, the jet-lag connection is particularly tangible here. It helps to keep the bedroom consistently dark and to avoid bright light on the way home. Not every shift is the same. Anyone who only occasionally covers a night shift usually copes well.
