Another advantage of niacin is its relative heat stability – it survives cooking better than some other B vitamins, even though some can leach into the cooking water. For most people, that means their needs are well covered.
If diet demonstrably isn't enough, a supplement can make sense, ideally after checking with a doctor and dosed appropriately. One practical point: taking larger amounts of nicotinic acid can trigger what's known as a flush – a temporary reddening of the skin with a feeling of warmth or tingling. It's also clear that a severe, long-term deficiency can have serious consequences.
