Swimming challenges the whole body: long laps in the pool, cool water, a large range of motion, and for many, a daily training routine that takes place in indoor pools and therefore largely without daylight. This brings three questions into focus that swimmers regularly ask themselves: how does energy stay stable across a whole session, how can a normally functioning immune system be supported, and what matters for joints and connective tissue? This guide sets out the most important nutrients – as part of a balanced diet, not as a substitute for it.
Why swimmers take a close look at nutrients
Energy expenditure in swimming is high because water cools the body more strongly and offers more resistance than air. At the same time, the volume and frequency of training place demands on metabolism. Anyone in the pool several times a week has a correspondingly higher need for energy and for the micronutrients involved in energy metabolism and muscle function. A colourful, wholesome diet with enough carbohydrates, high-quality protein, vegetables, fruit, and good fats covers this need in many cases. Food supplements can make sense when individual nutrients are hard to reach through diet – they are not a substitute for a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Magnesium is popular among swimmers because it is involved in many processes of muscle work. Authorised EU health claims include: "magnesium contributes to normal muscle function", "magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism", and "magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue". In addition: "magnesium contributes to electrolyte balance". Good sources are whole-grain products, nuts, legumes, and green vegetables.
Iron for oxygen transport and less fatigue
Iron is involved in transporting oxygen in the blood – a process central to any endurance exertion. The recognised claims are "iron contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body", "iron contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism", and "iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue". Iron deficiency occurs more often especially in menstruating women and with a one-sided diet. Since unnecessary iron intake is not advisable, a suspected deficiency should be medically assessed and the level measured before supplementing. Absorption from plant sources can be improved, since "vitamin C increases iron absorption".
Vitamin B12 and energy metabolism
Vitamin B12 also plays a role in energy metabolism: "vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism" and "vitamin B12 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue". B12 is found mainly in animal foods. If you eat a vegan diet, you should keep an eye on your supply and supplement with medical guidance. Further B vitamins, copper, and calcium also contribute to energy metabolism – one more reason to build a broad overall diet rather than relying on a single nutrient.
Don't underestimate fluid and electrolytes
A common misconception: if you train in water, you don't sweat. In fact, the body loses fluid and electrolytes during swimming too, just without it being as noticeable as on land. Especially during longer sessions, it's therefore worth drinking deliberately before and after training. Electrolytes such as magnesium and calcium are involved in muscle function; for magnesium, the electrolyte balance claim also applies. A balanced diet with vegetables, fruit, and whole grains usually provides these minerals in sufficient amounts.
Immune system: training load and everyday indoor pool life

Vitamin C – especially around intense exertion
Vitamin C is one of the best-known immune nutrients. Recognised claims are "vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system" and the claim especially relevant to athletes: "vitamin C contributes to the maintenance of the normal function of the immune system during and after intense physical exercise". In addition, "vitamin C contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue" applies. Peppers, citrus fruits, berries, and cabbage vegetables provide plenty of vitamin C.
Vitamin D – a topic for indoor swimmers
Anyone who trains mainly in an indoor pool gets hardly any sunlight on their skin – and in humans, vitamin D is mainly formed in the skin with the help of sunlight. In the months with little sun, supply in Germany is often tight anyway. Authorised claims include "vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system", "vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function", and "vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones". Whether and in what amount supplementation makes sense depends on your individual level – this can be determined medically.
Zinc for the immune system and carbohydrate metabolism
Zinc rounds out the picture: "zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system" and "zinc contributes to normal carbohydrate metabolism" – the latter fitting well with the carbohydrate-focused diet of endurance training. Good sources are meat, cheese, oats, and legumes.
Joints and connective tissue: shoulders, knees, and cartilage
Even though swimming is considered easy on the joints, the shoulders (front crawl, butterfly) and knees (breaststroke kick) are put under strain by the constantly repeated movement patterns. These loads add up over thousands of strokes a week, which is why technique, warming up, and balancing strength training play an important role. Collagen is a central structural protein in cartilage and connective tissue. Calcium, vitamin D, and manganese for bones and connective tissue
Calcium and vitamin D are relevant for the bony foundation: "calcium contributes to normal muscle function", along with the already-mentioned role of vitamin D in maintaining normal bones. "Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones" also applies. For connective tissue, in addition: "manganese contributes to normal connective tissue formation". These nutrients are found in dairy products, green vegetables, nuts, and whole grains.
Diet and lifestyle as the foundation
Food supplements are the fine-tuning – not the foundation. Ahead of targeted preparations come adequate carbohydrates to refill stores, high-quality protein for the muscles, enough fluid (you sweat in water too), regular recovery, and adequate sleep.
