Omega-3 (EPA/DHA) and Vitamin E Explained Briefly

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that the body can only produce to a limited extent on its own. From a nutritional standpoint, the two most important are the long-chain fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). They're found above all in oily saltwater fish such as salmon, mackerel or herring, and in the fish oil produced from them; a plant-based source is microalgae. For EPA and DHA, the EU-authorised claim is clear: EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function. According to the EU requirement, this effect occurs from a daily intake of 250 mg EPA and DHA.

Vitamin E, by contrast, isn't a fat but a fat-soluble vitamin – more precisely, a group of related compounds, the tocopherols and tocotrienols. The best-known and most biologically active form in the body is alpha-tocopherol. As a fat-soluble nutrient, vitamin E works wherever fats are found: in cell membranes and in the fat-associated components of the blood. Here too there's a clear authorised claim: vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. This antioxidant property is precisely the key to why vitamin E shows up so often alongside omega-3.

Why Omega-3 and Vitamin E Are a Good Match

The polyunsaturated fatty acids that make omega-3 so special are, at the same time, its most vulnerable point. Every double bond in the fatty acid is a potential point of attack for oxygen. When oxygen reacts with these bonds, it's called oxidation – in everyday life, you know the result as oil or fat that's gone rancid. In fish oil, exactly the same process takes place, just inside the capsule. Experts measure this degradation partly via the so-called TOTOX value (Total Oxidation Value), which combines the primary and secondary products of oxidation.

This is where vitamin E comes in. As a fat-soluble antioxidant, it dissolves in the oil and can help shield the sensitive fatty acids from oxidation by intercepting some of the reactive oxygen compounds before they attack the double bonds. That's exactly why many manufacturers add a small amount of vitamin E – usually in the form of mixed tocopherols – to their capsules as a freshness protector. So the primary reason is a technical one: the vitamin E keeps the oil in the capsule stable. Important for getting this right: the amount of vitamin E used as a freshness protector in the oil is usually small and serves primarily to keep the product stable – not to cover your vitamin E requirement. A noticeable vitamin E supply through diet comes above all from vegetable oils, nuts and seeds. So the two nutrients complement each other on two levels here: in the product, as a stabiliser, and in the body, as two independent nutrients each with its own authorised function.

How to Combine Omega-3 and Vitamin E

Both nutrients are fat-soluble – that's the central rule for taking them. Fat-soluble substances are absorbed by the gut considerably better when there's some fat in the digestive tract at the same time. In practice, this means:

  • Take with a meal: It's best to take omega-3 capsules (with or without added vitamin E) with a main meal that contains some fat – for example breakfast with yoghurt and nuts, or lunch. The same applies to a separate vitamin E supplement.
  • Not on an empty stomach: Without fat, absorption can be lower, and some people report a fishy aftertaste when taking fish oil on an empty stomach. A meal often lessens this.
  • Time of day is secondary: Whether you take it in the morning or evening plays a minor role. What matters is consistency and pairing it with a meal that contains fat.
  • Also applies to the plant-based option: If you prefer algae oil over fish oil, the same approach works. Algae oil also provides EPA and DHA, is likewise sensitive to oxidation, and therefore benefits just as much from added vitamin E and from being taken with a meal.

At least as important as the timing is freshness when it comes to omega-3. Because the oil can oxidise, look for a product with a low degree of oxidation – some manufacturers state a TOTOX value for this. A low value indicates fresh oil. Practical everyday pointers: a best-before date that's still clearly in the future, cool and dark storage, and capsules that don't smell or taste distinctly of rancid fish. Added vitamin E does support this freshness, but it's no substitute for proper manufacturing and storage.

As a point of reference, the German Nutrition Society (DGE) gives estimated values for adults in the range of around 11 to 15 mg alpha-tocopherol equivalent per day.
  • Keep the upper limit in mind: Vitamin E is fat-soluble and gets stored in the body. For high-dose standalone supplements, European authorities have derived upper limits for daily intake – for the tolerable total intake from all sources, EFSA states 300 mg alpha-tocopherol per day for adults. Through a normal diet alone, getting too much is practically impossible; the question only becomes relevant with very high-dose supplements. Stick to the serving suggestion stated on the product.
  • Form and purity: Look for information on the oil's origin and purification, as well as a low oxidation value. These points say more about product quality than a high total oil figure.

Omega-3 and vitamin E are a sensible, well-tolerated combination – mainly because the vitamin E keeps the sensitive oil stable. That said, it shouldn't be overstated: the added vitamin E is primarily a freshness protector for the product, not a standalone miracle ingredient or a guarantee of extra health benefits. The two nutrients each have their own, scientifically recognised function – EPA and DHA for normal heart function, vitamin E for protecting cells from oxidative stress – but there's no authorised claim for a combined health effect of the two together. So the practical benefit of the pairing lies in the product itself: you get an omega-3 that stays fresh for longer – and with an oil this sensitive, that's no small advantage.

Dietary supplements are also no substitute for a balanced diet.
