Twice as much calcium as magnesium, so goes the rule of thumb that circulates through forums, product descriptions and guides. But is that actually true? Do you really need to bring a calculator to the dinner table for these two minerals to do their job? Or is the 2:1 ratio more of a stubborn myth than a solid rule?

Calcium and Magnesium, Briefly Introduced

Why Calcium and Magnesium Are So Often Mentioned Together

The reason for the close relationship between the two isn't a marketing trick, but comes down to biology. In muscle tissue, calcium and magnesium work like an accelerator and a brake. Put simply: calcium is heavily involved in tensing, magnesium in the counter-movement of releasing and relaxing. Both are needed for normal muscle function, and it's exactly this interplay that leads people to view them as a team.

On top of that, both minerals belong to the divalent cations, meaning they're chemically related to some degree. In the gut, they partly use similar transport pathways. That's the real core of the ratio discussion: when two nutrients share the same absorption pathway, they can slow each other down to some extent at very high amounts.

And the 2:1 Ratio?

The figure 2:1 does have a real origin. If you look at the DGE's recommended intakes for adults, they fall roughly into this range, with considerably more calcium than magnesium. That's where the rule of thumb comes from, that a supplement or diet should mirror exactly this ratio.

Honestly assessed, though, this is no law of biology. There's no solid basis for the claim that exactly 2:1 is necessary for the two minerals to function, or that deviating from it is harmful. Your body actively regulates the absorption of calcium and magnesium and adapts to actual need. Far more important than a rigid numerical ratio is the simple question: are you getting an adequate amount of both over the course of the day? So the 2:1 ratio is a useful, rough guide, not a magic formula you need to hit to the decimal point.

How to Combine Calcium and Magnesium Sensibly

In the vast majority of cases, there's nothing wrong with taking calcium and magnesium together, especially when the amounts are moderate – whether from a combination product or simply from food. The body copes with this well.

Things only get interesting with high single doses. Because the two partly share the same absorption mechanisms in the gut, a very large portion of calcium can slightly reduce magnesium absorption at that same moment, and vice versa. So if you're supplementing larger amounts of both minerals, you can stagger the timing – for example, taking calcium with one meal of the day and magnesium with another, or in the evening. For guidance on amounts: the DGE gives reference values for adults that fall roughly around 1,000 mg calcium and around 300 to 400 mg magnesium per day, depending on sex and life stage. These amounts refer to total intake from all sources, meaning above all from diet. Dairy products, green vegetables and calcium-rich mineral water provide calcium, while nuts, wholegrains, legumes and dark chocolate are among the good sources of magnesium. Anyone eating a varied diet – with enough vegetables, wholegrains, nuts and, tolerability permitting, dairy – usually already covers the basics well. A supplement then builds on this foundation in a targeted way, rather than needing to create a mathematically perfect ratio. That's exactly why it's worth taking an honest look at your own diet first, and only then considering where a supplement might actually close a gap.

What You Should Watch Out For

As harmless as the combination is in everyday life, a few points are worth a closer look.

Keep the upper limits in mind. A permanently very high intake of calcium from supplements isn't desirable. The BfR recommends limiting calcium supplementation via dietary supplements to a moderate additional amount, since the amount from food adds on top. For magnesium, the upper limit concerns above all the supplemented amount – that is, the magnesium taken on top of your dietary intake. Too much of it usually shows up first as soft stools. Keep some distance from iron. Both calcium and larger amounts of magnesium can impair iron absorption from the gut if everything is taken at the same time. This is, in practice, the most important interaction point in this trio.

Fit the timing to your day. Many people tolerate magnesium especially well in the evening, while calcium can easily be spread across meals.
