When buying medicinal mushrooms, what matters most is that a product is derived from the fruiting body rather than grain-based mycelium, that the beta-glucan content is stated (not just “polysaccharides”), that a traceable extract ratio is given, and that a current lab certificate for heavy metals and purity is available. Origin and mushroom species should be clearly declared.
Medicinal mushrooms are one of the fastest-growing categories in dietary supplements – and also one of the most confusing. Reishi, Cordyceps, Lion's Mane, Chaga: the names sound exotic, and the product claims often are too. But there's a world of difference between a high-quality fruiting-body extract and a cheap powder bulked out with grain – in price as much as in composition. Anyone looking to buy medicinal mushrooms should therefore ignore the marketing language and focus on a handful of concrete quality markers that can be objectively verified.
This guide explains, neutrally and without health claims, what actually sets products apart, which label information really matters, and how to spot a reputable supplier. What Are Medicinal Mushrooms?
The term "medicinal mushrooms" isn't a protected or legally defined category – it's an umbrella term for edible and medicinal fungi that have traditionally been used as food and for enjoyment, particularly within East Asian food culture. Botanically, these are very different species. The best-known include:
- Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum, also known as "Ling Zhi"): a woody mushroom that's barely palatable fresh, which is why it's almost always sold as an extract.
- Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris, or the wild-growing Cordyceps sinensis): a traditional topic in sports nutrition.
- Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus): also popular as a culinary mushroom.
- Chaga (Inonotus obliquus): grows mainly on birch trees in cold regions.
- Maitake, Shiitake, Pleurotus (oyster mushroom), and Trametes (turkey tail) round out the range, along with several others.
In Europe, these mushrooms are sold as food or food supplements. Important context: there are no EU-approved health claims for medicinal mushrooms. That means suppliers may not promise any specific effects. Consumers should treat any claims suggesting a cure or relief of symptoms with corresponding scepticism. Buying medicinal mushrooms is about food quality, not medicine.
Fruiting Body vs. Mycelium – The Key Difference
No other criterion separates high-quality products from inferior ones as clearly as this one. A mushroom consists of two parts: the fruiting body – the visible "mushroom" we know from the forest and the kitchen – and the mycelium, the thread-like root network that runs through the growing substrate.
Traditionally, medicinal mushrooms are used via the fruiting body, since that's where the characteristic active compounds are concentrated. In industrial production, however – particularly in North America – a cheaper approach has become established: the mycelium is grown on a grain substrate (usually rice or oats) and then ground up together with the substrate. The result is often sold as "mycelium" or "mycelial biomass".
The problem: a product like this contains a substantial share of undigested grain. Analyses such as the widely cited study by the company Nammex found that in some mycelium-on-grain products, starch content was very high while the proportion of mushroom-typical beta-glucans was correspondingly low. For buyers, this means: if you want the whole mushroom, look for the label "fruiting body" – and look more closely at wording like "mycelium-based", "full spectrum", or "organic mycelium powder". Reputable suppliers clearly state which part of the mushroom is used.
Extract vs. Powder: What's the Difference?
Besides which part of the mushroom is used, how it's processed is just as decisive. Broadly speaking, there are two approaches:
Powder (Ground Fruiting Body)
Here, the dried fruiting body is simply ground into a fine powder. This is the most natural, least processed form, and it retains the mushroom's full spectrum of compounds. The downside: mushroom cell walls are made of chitin, which the human digestive tract can only break down to a limited extent. A plain powder is therefore less concentrated – you need larger amounts.
Extract
With an extract, the water-soluble or alcohol-soluble components are drawn out and concentrated. There are three main approaches:
- Hot-water extract: draws out mainly the water-soluble polysaccharides and beta-glucans. Many medicinal mushrooms have traditionally been simmered into a decoction – the hot-water extract essentially recreates this process.
- Alcohol (ethanol) extract: additionally draws out the non-water-soluble components – in Reishi, for example, the triterpenes.
- Dual extract: combines both methods and is considered especially thorough for woody mushrooms like Reishi.
An extract is more concentrated and easier for the body to access, because the chitin has already been broken down. For most people, a high-quality fruiting-body extract is therefore the natural choice. Plain powders can make sense if you'd rather use the mushroom more as a food – Lion's Mane in cooking, for example.
Standardisation: Beta-Glucans, Not Just "Polysaccharides"
Now it's getting technical – but this is exactly where the wheat gets separated from the chaff. Many labels boast a high content of "polysaccharides", for example "standardised to 30% polysaccharides". That sounds impressive, but it says very little.
The reason: "polysaccharides" is an umbrella term for complex sugars – and that also includes starch from the grain substrate. A mycelium-on-rice product can therefore display a high "polysaccharide value" that, in reality, consists largely of rice starch. The fraction that's actually characteristic of mushrooms, by contrast, is beta-glucans (more precisely: beta-1,3/1,6-glucans).
A genuinely informative label therefore states the beta-glucan content – ideally determined using a validated analytical method (e.g. the Megazyme assay) and reported separately from the alpha-glucan (starch) share. If a supplier only advertises "polysaccharides" without giving a beta-glucan figure, that's a warning sign. The same logic applies to other standardisation markers – such as withanolide content in Ashwagandha or curcumin content in turmeric: it's not the total amount that counts, but the marker compound.
What to Look for When Buying Medicinal Mushrooms
Let's summarise the quality markers that matter most when buying:
1. Fruiting Body, Not Mycelium
Look for a clear "100% fruiting body" declaration. If this is missing, or the label says "mycelium", "biomass", or nothing at all, you should be sceptical.
2. Beta-Glucan Content, Not Just "Polysaccharides"
The beta-glucan figure should be listed separately. A low or missing beta-glucan share alongside a high "polysaccharide" value points to starch.
3. A Traceable Extract Ratio
A figure like "10:1" means that 10 kg of raw mushroom were processed into 1 kg of extract. Higher isn't automatically better – a high ratio can also be "inflated" using starch-rich raw material. The extract ratio only becomes meaningful in combination with the beta-glucan content.
4. Origin and Organic Quality
Mushrooms absorb substances from their growing substrate, which is why origin matters. An EU organic seal or a clearly named, controlled growing region builds trust. For wild-harvested mushrooms (Chaga, for example), the region of origin should be stated transparently.
5. Purity and Lab Testing
Because mushrooms can accumulate heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic, an up-to-date lab certificate (certificate of analysis, CoA) is especially important. Reputable suppliers test every batch for heavy metals, microbiology, and – for wild-harvested mushrooms – pesticides. If in doubt, ask to see the test report.
6. Putting the Price in Perspective
A genuine fruiting-body extract with a stated beta-glucan content is more expensive to produce than a mycelium-grain powder. Strikingly cheap offers are often a sign of low-quality raw material. Conversely, a high price alone doesn't guarantee quality either – what matters is the combination of the criteria above. It's best to calculate the price per pure amount of fruiting-body extract, or per beta-glucan share per daily serving; only then do offers become genuinely comparable. This same "price per active compound" logic also helps with other categories, incidentally – for example with protein powder, where the price per gram of protein counts, or with Omega-3, where the EPA/DHA content is what matters.
7. Single Mushroom or Blend?
Both single-mushroom products (just Reishi, just Lion's Mane, and so on) and blends combining several mushrooms in one capsule are available on the market. Blends look appealing at first glance, but they split the total amount across multiple species – so the share of each individual mushroom ends up correspondingly small, and is often not listed separately. If you want to use a specific mushroom in a targeted way, a transparently declared single-mushroom product is usually the clearer choice. With blends, at the very least the amount of each mushroom species should be identifiable – umbrella figures like "mushroom complex 500 mg" without a breakdown say very little.
Buying Checklist
- Fruiting body stated (not mycelium/grain)?
- Beta-glucan content given as a percentage – not just "polysaccharides"?
- Alpha-glucan (starch) share transparent or low?
- Extract ratio (e.g. 8:1, 10:1) stated and plausible?
- Mushroom species given by its Latin name (e.g. Ganoderma lucidum)?
- Origin/growing region and, where applicable, an organic seal stated?
- Up-to-date lab certificate for heavy metals & purity available?
- Ingredient list free of unnecessary fillers and anti-caking agents?
- Supplier communicates without health claims, in a factual way?
Intake and Use
Medicinal mushrooms are usually sold as capsules, loose extract powder, or – less commonly – as a tincture. Extract powder can be stirred into warm (not boiling) drinks, coffee, or smoothies; capsules are more practical on the go. Traditionally, many mushrooms are taken spread throughout the day or prepared as a warm infusion.
Specific serving amounts depend on the individual manufacturer's instructions – stick to the recommended daily serving stated on the packaging. Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. If you take medication, are pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have a pre-existing condition, check with a doctor before use. As a general rule, caution is advised if you have a mushroom allergy.
An Honest Assessment
Medicinal mushrooms have a long tradition as food – eaten both for nourishment and enjoyment – and interest in them is considerable. At the same time, the scientific evidence for many of their effects in humans is limited, and – as mentioned – no approved EU health claims exist for them. So if you're buying medicinal mushrooms, it's worth doing so with realistic expectations: as a traditionally used food, not a medicine.
The practical value of this guide lies less in recommending any particular product than in helping you avoid poor choices. Much of the price variation on the market simply comes down to fruiting body vs. mycelium, and honest vs. flattering standardisation figures. Working through the checklist will help you spot reputable suppliers far more reliably than any advertising promise. Comparable quality logic, incidentally, also applies to other natural products such as Shilajit or black seed oil – origin, processing, and lab testing are the common thread.
